The superficial velocity (SV) is defined as gas production rate/cross section and is measured in m/s, btu/fl2-hr, etc. It is an important figure of merit of gasifiers and combustors. Each device will have a maximum SV that it can operate at satisfactorily. In downdraft gasification the SV determines the intensity of the flaming pyrolysis reaction and so controls gas, charcoal and tar production. The temperature in the sampling line of the product gas of the updraft gasifier is kept at 00 250 C (to be examined) and in downdraft and fluid ised-bed gasification at 250 C.

A tile stove heating insert, illustrated by Figure 5, with a thermal capacity of 10 kW, representing the state of the art of wood log combustion systems was selected as a test stove. The firing principle of the stove can be described as "backside downdraft". It consists of two spatially separated, well insulated reaction zones for gasification of the wood fuel and burnout of the combustible gases, respectively.
