Dow Corning Silastic

Ethyl p-aminobenzoate was used as the test compound for determining release characteristics. It was suspended in silicone elastomer base (Dow Corning Silastic, type 382). After the benzoate was thoroughly dispersed in the elastomer, the catalyst was added and the voids in the device were immediately filled. When cured, excess rubber was trimmed off so that the bottoms of the cells were flush with the lower surface of the device.

Such a fluoroalkene, prepared for the first time by Haszeldine [283] by dehydro-iodination of F3CCH2CH2I, is the original precursor of commercially available fluorinated silicone from Dow Corning, called Silastic (see Sect. 7.2). Such a polymer preserves interesting properties (inertness, fair surface tension, chain mobility) at low and rather high temperatures. 

Three series of products are used as lubricants silicone-oils or polytrifluoro-propyl methyl siloxane (Silastic 15-53 produced by the Dow Corning Company), perfluorinated polyethers (Fomblin, Montedison now Ausimont Company) and Kel F oils (3 M Company). Only these latter ones are obtained directly by telomerisation.

Substrate materials included poly (dimethyl siloxane) (SR) (Silastic Rubber, medical grade, Dow Corning), fluorinated ethylene/propylene copolymer (FEP) (Teflon FEP, Dupont), and a segmented copolyether-urethane-urea (PEUU) based on poly (propylene glycol), methylene bis-4-phenylisocyanate, and ethylenediamine. This PEUU was provided by D. J. Lyman.

Plasma-free platelet solution (washed platelet, WP) and PRP were prepared by adding the platelet pellets to PBS and PPP, respectively. 0,6 ml of WP or PRP was placed on each of the hydrogel films of 1.8 cm in a vial and allowed to stand for 1 hr at 37 °C. Then, the films were vigorously washed with PBS and put into 2 ml of 0.1 M phosphate buffer (PB) containing 0.5 % Triton-XlOO to lyse the adhered platelets. Lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) activity of the lysate was determined with an enzymatic method to count the adhered platelets with the use of a calibration curve of platelet counts(Tamada,Y., Kyoto University, Doctor Thesis, 1989.). To confirm the reproducibility, the platelet adhesion experiment was repeated five times for the same film. A Silastic film, donated by Dow Corning Cor., Ltd., Midland, USA, was used as a reference material.

Structures of the various butadiene/acrylonitrile and silicone elastomers used in preparing these adhesives are represented in Fig. 2. Silastic LS-420 and Sylgard 184 elastomers were obtained from Dow Corning. The aromatic amine-terminated butadiene/acrylonitrile (ATBN) is a highly viscous experimental elastomer and was contributed by B. F. Goodrich Research Center, Brecksville, Ohio. The aromatic amine-terminated liquid silicone elastomers were prepared by M T Chemicals, Rahway, NJ. 

An alternative to administering retinoids as a solution is to administer them as neat powder in a depot. In this case, a rubber compound called Silastic 382 Medical Elastomer (Dow Corning Corporation, Midland, MI) acts as the depot. tRA is released from this compound at a constant rate over the first 24 h and then the release plateaus by which time about 65-70% of the total content has been released (26). 

The principal companies supplying flexible silicone resin products are General Electric, Dow Corning Corp. (Silastic), Stauffer Chemical Co., Union Carbide Corp., Wacker, and Shin Etsu.

Pour a mixture of a silicone and a cure agent over the fibers, permit it to cure and peel it off. The replicating mixture can be Dow Corning RTV 3112 Encapsulant and Catalyst F (fast cure) [241], or Dow Corning RTV silicone rubber with silastic curing agent, or Xantopren (Unitek) [240].
