Double salt treatment

If lighter colors than these are desired it is necessary to decolorize all the melanin in the hair in a preliminary step, and then add color back to the desired depth in a second treatment. This is known as a double-process treatment. The decolorization step consists of treating the hair with an alkaline mixture of persulfate salts and peroxide. The persulfate is added to the peroxide as a dry powder immediately before applying to the hair. Although the persulfate salts alone do not have any bleaching effect, the persulfate—peroxide mixture can remove all the melanin in the hair. Dark brown or darker hair can be lightened to a light blonde shade in about an hour. [Pg.457]

Uses. The principal use of monosodium phosphate is as a water-soluble soHd acid and pH buffer, primarily in acid-type cleaners. The double salt, NaH2P04 H PO, referred to as hemisodium orthophosphate or sodium hemiphosphate, is often generated in situ from monosodium phosphate and phosphoric acid in these types of formulations. Mixtures of mono- and disodium phosphates are used in textile processing, food manufacture, and other industries to control pH at 4—9. The central carbon atom is derived from an aromatic aldehyde or a substance capable of generating an aldehyde during the course of the condensation. Malachite green is prepared by heating benzaldehyde under reflux with a slight excess of dimethyl aniline in aqueous acid (Fig. 2). The reaction mass is made alkaline and the excess dimethylaniline is removed by steam distillation. The resulting leuco base is oxidized with freshly prepared lead dioxide to the carbinol base, and the lead is removed by precipitation as the sulfate. Ammonium Tetranitrito - diammino - cobaltate, [Co(XH3)2 (N02)4]NH4, is prepared from cobaltous chloride by mixing an aqueous solution of the salt with aqueous ammonium-chloride solution, sodium nitrite, and ammonia, and oxidising the mixture by passing air through it for several hours.
