Mendeleev, Dimitri, 104,107 Mendelevium, oxidation number, 414 Mercuric perchlorate, 237 Mercurous perchlorate, 237 Mercury, oxidation numbers, 414 Mercury (planet), data on, 444 Metabolism, oxidative, 429 Metallic alloys, 309 bond, 303 elements. 303 radius, 380 substances, 81 Metals alkali, 94... [Pg.462]

Because of its extremely low abundance, short half-life, and high radioactivity, neither francium nor its compounds have economic applications. see also Alkali Metals Curie, Marie Sklodowska Mendeleev, Dimitri Radioactivity. [Pg.123]

Metallic gallium and its salts have little or no toxicity, compared to the very toxic thallium salts. The toxicity of the aluminum ion is controversial. The gallium ion has been investigated as a possible antitumor agent, but no clinically useful compounds have been produced, see also Inorganic Chemistry Mendeleev, Dimitri Semiconductors. [Pg.133]

Mendeleev, Dimitri. 1905. Principles of Chemistry I. London Longmans. [Pg.71]

Because of their metallic and alkaline properties, potassium and especially sodium are widely used in a variety of industrial processes both as metals and as compounds with various other elements. Lithium is rarely used, but does find application in lightweight alloys with magnesium. Rubidium and cesium are not commonly utilized industrially, except for some applications in electronics. Sodium and potassium are essential for life, sodium being the principal extracellular and potassium the major intracellular monovalent cations. The other alkali metals have no essential biological role, see ALSO Bunsen, Robert Cesium Davy, Humphry Francium Lithium Mendeleev, Dimitri Potassium Rubidium Sodium. [Pg.61]

In 1894 Cleve was awarded the Davy Medal by the Royal Society in London, see also Holmium Lanthanides Mendeleev, Dimitri Scandium Thulium. [Pg.258]

Even in the twenty-first century, although historians recognize that others, especially Meyer, should be given considerable credit for the discovery of the periodic properties of the elements, most textbooks credit only Mendeleev. SEE ALSO Bunsen, Robert Mendeleev, Dimitri Periodic Table. [Pg.783]

For nearly three centuries, a new element has been discovered every two-and-one-half years, on average. Undoubtedly, more will be found. Although their names and their discoveries will fikely involve controversies, their place at the table is already set. see also Alchemy Avogadro, Amedeo Bec-QUEREL, Antoine-Henri Bohr, Niels Cannizzaro, Stanislao Dalton, John Lavoisier, TVntoine Mendeleev, Dimitri Meyer, Lothar Pauli, Wolfgang Ramsay, William Rontgen, Wilhelm Rutherford, Ernest Seaborg, Glenn Theodore Thomson, Joseph John. [Pg.232]
