At the same time that Heisenberg was formulating his approach to the helium system, Born and Oppenheimer indicated how to formulate a quantum mechanical description of molecules that justified approximations already in use in treatment of band spectra. The theory was worked out while Oppenheimer was resident in Gottingen and constituted his doctoral dissertation. Born and Oppenheimer justified why molecules could be regarded as essentially fixed particles insofar as the electronic motion was concerned, and they derived the "potential" energy function for the nuclear motion. This approximation was to become the "clamped-nucleus" approximation among quantum chemists in decades to come.36... [Pg.252]

Alfred Werner was born in 1866 and died from arteriosclerosis in 1919, He started as an organic chemist and finished his chemical career in 1915 as one of the foremost inorganic chemists,. He won the Nobel Prize in 1913, During a period of two and a half decades he published 174 papers and supervised the work covered by 200 doctoral dissertations, Werner was the founder of coordination chemistry. He rejected the then prevailing concept formulated by Kekule) that the valence of an element is invariable and introduced instead the notion of principal and auxiliary valence. He also formulated the concept of coordination number, Werner used both the inductive and the deductive methods of reasoning. Most of his predictions on geometrical and optical isomerism were verified by experiment. [Pg.3]

Hypnosis fascinated me fiom my early teenage years and was the major focus of the first decade of my research career. My master s thesis and doctoral dissertation were studies of new uses for hypnosis in actively controlling both the process and the content of nocturnal dreaming. I spent two years in intense postdoctoral study of hypnosis at Stanford University and carried out research studies for several years thereafter. I am supposed to be an expert on hypnosis, yet in spite of years of study I still find it quite incredible. [Pg.71]

Wentworth has been a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Solar Energy Society, and Alpha Chi Sigma. He has published over 125 papers, written three textbooks, and received numerous patents. One of the publications from his doctoral dissertation was selected as a pioneer paper in analytical chemistry. His papers on the chemical applications of nonlinear least squares became Citation Index Classics. His patent for pulse discharge ionization detectors was selected as one of the 100 most significant inventions of 1997. He retired after four decades of teaching and research, having about forty graduate students, half of whom received doctorates. The Robert A. Welch Foundation supported his efforts every year. [Pg.23]
