Many other alkaloid-based medicines exist. Drugs based on berberine are used in the treatment of infections as well as in the treatment of AIDS. The taxanes (e.g., paclitaxel in Taxol drug and its synthetic analogue, docetaxel in Taxotere) have antineoplastic agents to cure cancers, Kaposi s sarcoma, and squamous cell carcinomas. Several novel alkaloids and their synthetic analogues are under development and considered to being accepted by U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical use. ... [Pg.369]

Uses Bevacizumab, in combination with fiuoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy, is indicated for patients with metastatic carcinoma of the colon or rectum [155, 156 ", 157, 158 ] in combination with paclitaxel or docetaxel for first-line treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer [159, 160 ] in addition to platinum-based chemotherapy, for first-line treatment of patients with unresectable, advanced, metastatic or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer, other than with predominantly squamous cell histology [161, 162 ] and in combination with interferon alfa-2a, for first-line treatment of patients with advanced and/or metastatic renal cell cancer [163, 164. ... [Pg.785]

The taxanes, paclitaxel and docetaxel, act by promoting the assembly of microtubules. The taxanes induce cell cycle arrest in the most radiosensitive phase, G2/M thereby promoting radiosensitivity. In vitro studies have also demonstrated apoptosis in cell culture lines with paclitaxel (32). Paclitaxel dose-dependent synergy is also seen in squamous carcinoma cell lines (33). Much literature has been published reg arding the use of taxanes when combined with radiotherapy. [Pg.152]
