Organic chemicals dissolved in groundwater originate from a release source, which may be point source (defined leak) or it may emanate from an area source, such as a mass of contaminated soil. Once dissolved, the chemicals disperse into the ground-water by molecular diffusion and advection (combined as dispersion), both of which are influenced by equilibrium distribution relationships with the aquifer materials. [Pg.342]

Non-Homogeneous CA a characteristic feature of all CA rules defined so far has been that of homogeneity - each cell of the system evolves according to the same rule 0. Hartman and Vichniac [hartSfi] were the first to systematically study a class of inhomogeneous CA (INCA), in which the state-transition rules are allowed to vary from cell to cell. Once the radionuclides reach the sediments they are subject to several processes, prime among them being sedimentation, mixing, radioactive decay and production, and chemical diagenesis. This makes the distribution profiles of radionuclides observed in the sediment column a residuum of these multiple processes, rather than a reflection of their delivery pattern to the ocean floor. Example 2 - Resource inputs and customer profitability. Firms invest resources in a customer relationship with the objective of earning a return on that investment. Consistent with this goal, Shapiro, Rangan, Moriarty, and Ross (1987) develop the price versus cost-to-serve (which includes pre-sale, order-related, distribution, and postsale service costs) framework, which links vendor investments to the returns from each customer relationship.
