Distribution operation drivers

A well run distribution operation is one operation that maximizes delivery asset (e.g., trucks) utilization at the same time that minimizes labor (e.g., drivers and delivery helpers) and delivers the expected customer service level (e.g., order or case fill rate). 

A familiar example of limited attentional resources being distributed among different mental and physical processes occurs in car driving. A driver in a foreign country who is required to operate a manual gear change system, and at the same time drive on the opposite side of the road, may find that he or she has little capacity available to navigate or respond to a sudden stop by the car in front. 

Drivers are required for many different types of process machine on a site. Power can be generated and distributed to drive electric motors, or direct drives can be used. Direct drives are inflexible as far as the utility system operation is concerned. A combination of direct drives and electric motors is usually the best solution for the site as a whole.

Sawdust and shavings predominate, although most plants are able to use chips or flakes made from roundwood to meet specific strength requirements in the product. Cost is the major driver, with the proportion of high cost material such as chips or roundwood limited to that necessary to meet product requirements. Particle size distribution and shape have become more important as the effect of these variables on product quality has been recognised, leading to reductions in cost. 

Efficient distribution implies good asset utilization. The primary assets in this problem are vehicles and drivers. Minimization of the number of drivers and of the total cost of the routes are frequently used objectives. Efficiency needs to be achieved while level of service is maintained that is, service is provided to all customers in such a way as to satisfy aU time-window constraints. This problem has a very short-term planning horizon. Since customer stops may differ from day to day and all the stops are known only a few hours before the actual pickup-and-delivery operation, the problem needs to be solved a few hours before implementation.
