If the gas-flow rate is increased, one eventuaHy observes a phase transition for the abovementioned regimes. Coalescence of the gas bubbles becomes important and a regime with both continuous gas and Hquid phases is reestabHshed, this time as a gas-flUed core surrounded by a predominantly Hquid annular film. Under these conditions there is usuaHy some gas dispersed as bubbles in the Hquid and some Hquid dispersed as droplets in the gas. The flow is then annular. Various qualifying adjectives maybe added to further characterize this regime. Thus there are semiannular, pulsing annular, and annular mist regimes. Over a wide variety of flow rates, the annular Hquid film covers the entire pipe waH. For very low Hquid-flow rates, however, there may be insufficient Hquid to wet the entire surface, giving rise to rivulet flow. [Pg.97]

Additives. Because of their versatility, imparted via chemical modification, the appHcations of ethyleneimine encompass the entire additive sector. The addition of PEI to PVC plastisols increases the adhesion of the coatings by selective adsorption at the substrate surface (410). PEI derivatives are also used as adhesion promoters in paper coating (411). The adducts formed from fatty alcohol epoxides and PEI are used as dispersants and emulsifiers (412). They are able to control the viscosity of dispersions, and thus faciHtate transport in pipe systems (413). Eatty acid derivatives of PEI are even able to control the viscosity of pigment dispersions (414). The high nitrogen content of PEIs has a flame-retardant effect. This property is used, in combination with phosphoms compounds, for providing wood panels (415), ceUulose (416), or polymer blends (417,418) with a flame-retardant finish. [Pg.13]

The yeast must be so finely dispersed throughout the wort that a quick yeast growth is assured, which leaves no possibiUty for other microorganisms, if any, to develop. The inoculation of yeast occurs through injection directly into the wort pipe. To be used in the next batch of wort, the yeast that is harvested after the end of fermentation must be protected against contamination. [Pg.23]

Fluidized combustion of coal entails the burning of coal particles in a hot fluidized bed of noncombustible particles, usually a mixture of ash and limestone. Once the coal is fed into the bed it is rapidly dispersed throughout the bed as it bums. The bed temperature is controUed by means of heat exchanger tubes. Elutriation is responsible for the removal of the smallest soHd particles and the larger soHd particles are removed through bed drain pipes. To increase combustion efficiency the particles elutriated from the bed are coUected in a cyclone and are either re-injected into the main bed or burned in a separate bed operated at lower fluidizing velocity and higher temperature. [Pg.526]

In annular flow, liquid flows as a thin film along the pipe wall and gas flows in the core. Some liquid is entrained as droplets in the gas core. At veiy high gas velocities, nearly all the liquid is entrained as small droplets. Inis pattern is called spray, dispersed, or mist flow. [Pg.652]

Pipe Lines The principal interest here will be for flow in which one hquid is dispersed in another as they flow cocurrently through a pipe (stratified flow produces too little interfacial area for use in hquid extraction or chemical reaction between liquids). Drop size of dispersed phase, if initially very fine at high concentrations, increases as the distance downstream increases, owing to coalescence [see Holland, loc. cit. Ward and Knudsen, Am. In.st. Chem. Eng. J., 13, 356 (1967)] or if initially large, decreases by breakup in regions of high shear [Sleicher, ibid., 8, 471 (1962) Chem. Eng. ScL, 20, 57 (1965)]. Each vent device discharge pipe is extended into the vessel and its end is fitted with a deflector device. This disperses the jet stream of solids (catalyst) and liquids discharged and dissipates this force, which should otheiwise be exerted on the vessel wall immediately opposite. [Pg.2300]

Mists and Sprays - There are numerous industrial chemical operations which involve liquid-in-gas dispersions. These operations generate mists and sprays that consist of particles in diameter ranges of 0.1 to 5,000 fim. Engineers most commonly encounter spray droplets which are particles often formed unintentionally in chemical plant operations. For example, vapors or fumes may condense onto piping, ducts, or stack walls. Under such conditions liquid films form. [Pg.390]
