Disodium octaborate

Other Sodium Borates. SOLUBOR, TIM-BOR, or POLYBOR (63), proprietary products of United States Borax Chemical Corp., have the approximate composition of disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, Na20 4320 4H2O. This material is produced by spray-drying mixtures of borax and boric acid. 

Other Sodium Borates. Prices for disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (SOLUBOR, TIM-BOR, POLYBOR), sodium metaborate tetrahydrate, and sodium metaborate dihydrate in 1985 were 924/1, 880/t, and 1034/1, respectively. The corresponding prices in 1990 were 1056/t, 990/t (technical grade), and 1298/t (technical grade), respectively (33). 

Disodium Oetaborate Tetrahydrate, Commercially available products, having the approximate composition of a hypothetical disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, have found apphcation in wood (qv) preservatives, fertilizer sprays, insecticides, herbicides, and fire retardants. In many apphcations the large water solubihty of these products is an asset. 

Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (TiM-BOR) is registered for a variety of pests including termites, wood destroying beeties, and carpenter ants. This same compound is also used to control fly larvae in manure piles and is marketed as POLYBOR 3 for this apphcation. 

Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate is also used to protect wood from wood destroying fungi and pests. Whereas it has mainly been used for this apphcation in New Zealand, it is being introduced into the Urhted States for this use.

Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate. The composition of a commercially available sodium borate hydrate, 66.3 wt % B203, POLYBOR (64), corresponds quite closely to that of a hypothetical compound, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, Na2Bg013 TH O or Na O 4-B203 4H20. This product dissolves rapidly in water without the temperature decrease, which occurs when the crystalline borates dissolve, and easily forms viscous supersaturated solutions at elevated temperatures. Inorganic insecticides are some of the oldest insecticides used in agriculture. However, these insecticides have been largely replaced by synthetic insecticides. Boric acid, borax, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, and cryolite are still available on the market. 

Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (a borate salt) (Na2B8013 4 H20) is a larvicide used to treat lumber and other wood products to control termites and other wood-infesting insects. Its oral LD50in rats is 2.0 g/kg.

The other sodium borates such as sodium metaborate (NaB02 4H2O) and disodium octaborate (Na2B( 0 3 4H2O) are of minor importance. 

Borates are the most commonly used and versatile of the unfixed waterborne preservatives. They include formulations prepared from sodium tetraborate, sodium pentaborate and boric acid but the most common form is disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT). DOT has higher water solubility than other forms of borate. Glycol is also used to increase solubility in some formulations. 

Borates (such as boric acid, borax, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate) have been used as broad-spectrum wood preservatives for over 50 years. Zinc borate has a shorter history as wood preservative, but it is well accepted in that capacity. There is a belief that, generally, zinc borate is more effective against fungal decay compared to mold inhibition, though systematic studies, using different composite materials, are apparently lacking.
