Besides improvement of the dermatological properties of cosmetic formulations, the mildness of household detergents such as dishwashing liquids may also be increased [72,144]. Several authors [51,57,61,64,68,72,144,215] mention, in addition to the good dermatological properties, a good biodegradability and nontoxicity. 

Liquid detergents based on Pilot Calsoft, Cal suds and Calfoam surfactants produce safe, effective suds with excellent grease-cutting properties for hand dishwashing. Detergents containing Calamide C are especially mild to sensitive skin. 

Fatty acid glucamides are used in dishwashing liquids and heavy-duty liquids. Benefits include improved mildness for dishwashing liquids and improved enzyme stability in fabric washing detergents.

The use concentration of shampoos is estimated as near 8%. This is an order of magnitude greater than that of laundry and dishwashing liquids. Mildness to skin and low irritation to eyes are therefore important requirements for shampoos.

The consumer need for a milder dishwashing liquid was met in the early 1990s with the successful introduction of Palmolive Sensitive Skin and the milder positioning of Ivory LDLD. The use of nonionic and amphoteric surfactants resulted in clinically milder and less irritating products. In the last decade, however, further improving mildness was a significant objective for the major players in the LDLD market. Dawn Hand Care was the first to introduce protease, an enzyme that is claimed to soften skin by exfoliation of the top layer. 

Hand dishwashing liqnids are expected to clean all types of soils from dishware, have copious long-lasting foam, be mild to hands, and have a pleasant fragrance. These primary functional attributes are a result of the surfactant mixture used in the product. An excellent review of all types of surfactants used in detergents and their properties and applications is given in Ref 4. The major surfactants utilized in hand dishwashing liquids are described here. 

The third important performance property of a hand dishwashing liquid is mildness. The hands spend a lot of time in contact with the surfactant system either neat or diluted in a warm solution. Negative signals to the consumer include dryness, inflammation, redness (erythema), or swelling... 

The uses of CAPB in efficacious, mild dishwashing liquids and oral hygiene products are the latest examples of CAPB s versatility. Its excellent toxicological profile, which has been documented by many investigations and reports in the past few years, is one reason for its success in dentifrice products [25].
