Disease tolerance

Successful management of urea cycle defects involves a low-protein diet to minimize ammonia production as well as medications that enable the excretion of ammonia nitrogen in forms other than urea. Protein restriction is the mainstay of therapy. In patients with severe disease, tolerance for dietary protein may be so limited that it is not possible to support growth.

Most patients receiving metronidazole for Crohn s disease tolerate the agent fairly well however, mild adverse effects occur frequently. They commonly include paresthesias and reversible peripheral neuropathy, metallic taste, urticaria, and glossitis. Other effects include a disulflram-like reaction if alcohol is ingested in conjunction. 

The major research problems with animals are to develop transgenic animals that display increased feed efficiency, a lean carcass, improved reproductive capacity, increased disease tolerance and an enhanced growth rate. All of these would lead to lower dollar input with a greater profit for the farm operator. This is the production efficiency for which to strive and when implemented will yield greater profit for the entire agribusiness sector with enhanced enivonmental results. 

One project seeks to reduce the use of copper by identifying disease tolerant crop varieties, optimising copper application methods, and testing crop management strategies. The project also tests alternative products (and bio-stimulators) and evaluates the effects of applying copper on various soil types with perennial crops.
