Discontinuously particular oxides

The formation of discontinuities, particularly the grosser forms of pores and cracks, in an oxide layer is often attributable to the mass flows and volume changes occasioned by oxidation. As can be seen from Table 1.27 it is usual... [Pg.269]

The method requires the use of a reference standard sample in order to set the sensitivity level before an unknown sample is tested for discontinuities. The type of reference discontinuities used in a particular application has been specified by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Petroleum Institute. Some reference standards are depicted in Figure 2.10. Some of the discontinuities detected are seams, laps, cracks, slivers, scabs, pits, slugs, open welds, miswelds, improperly or misaligned welds, black or gray oxide weld penetrators, pinholes, hook cracks and surface cracks. [Pg.136]

A recent study on similar lines using thermally oxidized poly(butadiene), in which the emitting chromophore is an oR-un-saturated carbonyl compound and model enones in poly(methylmethacrylate) and low-temperature glasses has shown that in addition to transitions expected on the basis of O2 diffusion rates, discontinuities in the Arrhenius plots due to intramolecular properties of the probes themselves through mechanisms 2 and particularly 3, above, appear (39,91). Thus in poly(methylmethacrylate) with the probes shown... [Pg.268]

Clinical effectiveness was also reported for K 8409 (144). In animals the compound antagonized reserpine and was not anticholinergic, it did not decrease REM-sleep or inhibit 5-HT uptake, and its cardiotoxicity was much weaker than that of the tricyclics [349]. In mice, anti-aggressive activity was noted. It clearly showed selective MAO inhibition particularly in the brain, 5-HT oxidation was inhibited, but it had only little effect on the oxidation of tyramine in the liver [350]. In human volunteers it was well tolerated, but trials in patients with mild reactive depression demonstrated only little psychostimulation, not statistically different from placebo effect, whereupon the development was discontinued [350]. [Pg.299]

In rural areas, not only is the effect of fallout of trace elements from atmospheric pollution dramatically less, but there are relatively fewer sources of incidental contamination of the soil with particular elements. The practice of spraying the haulms of seed potatoes with solutions of arsenious oxide, in order to arrest further growth of tubers, has now, happily, been discontinued. Although this practice was widespread a few years ago, it was never justified, because dilute solutions of sulfuric acid are perfectly adequate for the purpose. [Pg.85]

The theory behind their use is that the alkoxysilane groups will hydrolyse to form silanol groups, which can then react with the metal oxide/hydroxide surface. Further hydrolysation will form an organic-inorganic hybrid at the metal surface that can lead to either a continuous or a randomly discontinuous film, as shown in Fig. 40. This is very much akin to one particular aspect of the sol-gel pretreatment approach (see Chapter 4). [Pg.259]

Honeycomb and seal assemblies exposed in the conventional furnaces were examined visually at each thermal cycle, in addition to being weighed. Specimens from each alloy/material combination were also discontinued after 5 and 10 cycles, as well as at the termination of the test, for more detailed surface examinations and cross-sectional studies. In some situations, however, where oxidation was proceeding rapidly, samples were discontinued after an intermediate numbers of cycles so that a particular event could be monitored more closely. Similarly, samples which had been exposed in the... [Pg.48]
