Discharge diagnostics

Another point in favor of the simpler, but less accurate, fluid approach is that discharge diagnostics are still quite primitive. In studies of electron and ion swarms, experimentalists routinely measure mobilities and diffusiv-ities with a precision in the order of a few percent. A sophisticated model must be used to properly interpret such experiments. However, for discharges, even relative concentration profiles for a few of the dozens of important neutral and charged species are difficult to attain. Thus, an overly complex and expensive model is probably inappropriate, and the fluid model is a good compromise at present. [Pg.406]

Some of the most powerful tools for in situ discharge diagnostics are optical (62). Plasma-induced emission spectroscopy, laser-induced fluorescence, laser absorption, and laser optogalvanic spectroscopy have all been... [Pg.406]

Diagnostic techniques that involve natural emissions are appHcable to plasmas of all sizes and temperatures and clearly do not perturb the plasma conditions. These are especially useful for the small, high temperature plasmas employed in inertial fusion energy research, but are also finding increased use in understanding the glow discharges so widely used commercially. [Pg.111]

Various plasma diagnostic techniques have been used to study the SiH discharges and results have helped in the understanding of the growth kinetics. These processes can be categorized as r-f discharge electron kinetics, plasma chemistry including transport, and surface deposition kinetics. [Pg.358]

The ability to use the Tafel slope as a diagnostic criterion can be exemplified by considering a discharge-chemical desorption mechanism for the h.e.r. in which either discharge or chemical desorption may be rate determining. ... [Pg.1209]

Thus a Tafel slope of -0-118 V/decade could be diagnostic of a discharge-chemical desorption mechanism in which proton discharge is the r.d.s. [Pg.1209]

In order to relate material properties with plasma properties, several plasma diagnostic techniques are used. The main techniques for the characterization of silane-hydrogen deposition plasmas are optical spectroscopy, electrostatic probes, mass spectrometry, and ellipsometry [117, 286]. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) is a noninvasive technique and has been developed for identification of Si, SiH, Si+, and species in the plasma. Active spectroscopy, such as laser induced fluorescence (LIF), also allows for the detection of radicals in the plasma. Mass spectrometry enables the study of ion and radical chemistry in the discharge, either ex situ or in situ. The Langmuir probe technique is simple and very suitable for measuring plasma characteristics in nonreactive plasmas. In case of silane plasma it can be used, but it is difficult. Ellipsometry is used to follow the deposition process in situ. [Pg.79]

The experimental techniques described above of charge—discharge and impedance are nondestructive. Tear-down analysis or disassembly of spent cells and an examination of the various components using experimental techniques such as Raman microscopy, atomic force microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, XAS, and the like can be carried out on materials-spent battery electrodes to better understand the phenomena that lead to degradation during use. These techniques provide diagnostic techniques that identify materials properties and materials interactions that limit lifetime, performance, and thermal stabiity. The accelerated rate calorimeter finds use in identifying safety-related situations that lead to thermal runaway and destruction of the battery. [Pg.12]

The perchlorate ion of potassium perchlorate, KCIO4, is a competitive inhibitor of thyroidal 1 transport via the Sodium Iodide Symporter (NIS).This drug can cause fatal aplastic anemia and gastric ulcers and is now rarely used. If administered with careful supervision, in limited low doses and for only brief periods, serious toxic effects can be avoided. The compound is especially effective in treating iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, which may occur, for example, in patients treated with the antiar-rhythmic compound amiodarone. Perchlorate ion can also be used in a diagnostic test of 1 incorporation into Tg, the so-called perchlorate discharge test. [Pg.751]
