Wynder and Shigematsu (15) were the first to suggest that nutritional factors in general and specifically differences in fat intake may be responsible for the international variation in colon cancer incidence. Subsequent descriptive epidemiologic studies have found a strong positive association between colon cancer mortality or incidence in different countries and per capita availability in national diets of total fat (4,16) and of animal fat, estimated from food balance sheets. Such international correlations may be supportive of a hypothesis, but they should be interpreted with caution because the dietary data were based not on actual intake information but on food disappearance data. [Pg.126]

Note Seafood consumption is based on disappearance data calculated as catch plus imports minus exports. Prevalence rates of major depression are from the Epidemiological Catchment Area Study, with the exception of Japan, as described in Hibbeln (1998). Results of a simple persons linear regression that includes all countries is (r = -0.85. p < 0.0005) and that excludes Japan (r=-0.74, p <0.03). Between 1970 and 1972, the dietary intake of a population sample of more than 15,000 persons was collected in Canada by the 24 hr recall system. The data from this survey provide a reasonable estimate of food eaten by various physiological groups in different regions of the country (Health and Welfare Canada, 1975). Although recall data are not precise, they at least provide a closer estimate of food consumed than domestic disappearance data and a comparison between the two sets of data permits some estimate of waste between the wholesale level and the plate. [Pg.233]

The fat contribution from the approximately 150 foods included in the food disappearance data is calculated by multiplying the per capita disappearance by the appropriate factor. Generally the food compositon values now used are from the "Nutrition Canada Survey Food Nutrient Conversion File" (Health and Welfare Canada, 1977), which are based on USDA data (Watt and Merrill, 1963) updated and modified to Canadian novelties. Apparent per capita fat consumption is estimated by summing the fat in all food disappearance estimates. A summary of the nutritive value of the food available for consumption between 1960 and 1975 has recently been published (Robbins and Barewal, 1981) which has minimized the discrepancies in counting systems and waste factors that have been used through the years. [Pg.233]

Domestic disappearance data are only approximations of food intake because no allowances are made for waste past the wholesale level for this reason such data yield information only on "apparent" food consumption. Food consumption data from the 1970-1972 Nutrition Canada Survey (Health and Welfare Canada, 1975) provided an estimate of the actual fat intake by different physiological groups of Canadians (Table II). Fat intake ranged from 31 g per day by infants to 154 g per day by males in the 20-39 year age group. At the point where capillary condensation commences in the finest mesopores, the walls of the whole mesopore system are already coated with an adsorbed film of area A, say. The quantity A comprises the area of the core walls and is less than the specific surface A (unless the pores happen to be parallel-sided slits).
