Information on agricultural practices that may impact on drinking-water may be obtained from direct surveys of catchments and from a variety of other sources, such as farmers associations, agricultural authorities or university extension services. Information on pesticide use may be available from these sources but, in many countries, registration authorities are the most important source of information. Where pesticides are imported, customs authorities may also be able to provide valuable advice. The department of agriculture or farming organizations may know which pesticides are used in a particular catchment. Information on production of pesticides for local markets may be available from departments of industry, chambers of commerce, industry associations and similar bodies. 

Directive 93/339/EEC on Checks for Conformity with the Rules on Product Safety of Imports states that products may not be placed on the Community market unless they conform to the rules applicable whereas member states are, thus, responsible for carrying out checks on their conformity. Furthermore, customs authorities must be closely involved in the market-monitoring operations provided for under Community and national rules. Distribution locations are included in the company-internal value chain network, if distribution volumes and values are under the control and in the books of the company independent if the warehousing and transportation is outsourced to 3PL distribution companies or not. Therefore, a company value chain network is enclosed with a central control of all volume and value information for the respective network and clear interfaces to customers and suppliers out of the network. While the internal value chain network is focused on material flows evaluated with respective internal costs, dedicated interfaces to multiple suppliers and multiple customers are characterized by material flows, financial flows and mutual instead of one-directional exchange of information as proposed for supply chains by several authors.

Certification and approvals are statements by an impartial accredited body that a product or service fulfills specific requirements, such as directives and standards. Certification may be mandatory, as is the case for some regulated products (Annex IV machines, telecom, medical devices, etc.), or voluntary as Is the case for most product and machine categories. Manufacturers often seek voluntary certification to assure themselves, customers, and authorities that their products meet the requirements set by law. Certification is commonplace in Europe and allows the use of a distinctive approval mark affixed to the product that is backed by a certificate and test report. The approval mark, is a recognized quality mark attesting to a products conformity to the relevant requirements, such as for EMC and safety. 

To implement this regulation, Directive 81/1468/EEC was published on mutual assistance between the administrative authorities of the member states and cooperation between the latter and the Commission to ensure the correct application of the law on customs matters. 

This directive involves four major stakeholders the producer, the recycling industry, the last holder or owner of the vehicle, and the authorities. It should be mentioned that customers are the primary decision makers in determining when a vehicle is at the end of its life. However, sometimes a vehicle is considered to be at the end of its life based on the condition that it is in.
