Detection and result The chromatogram was dried for 5 min in a stream of warm air, immersed in the reagent for 4 s and then heated to 110 C for 8 min. After cooling to room temperature it was immersed for 2 s in a 20% solution of dioctyl-sulfosuccinate in chloroform. 

Testing is undertaken by several methods, including chloroform extraction and use of a sulfonphthalein dye (absorbance of yellow-colored complex using bromophenol blue and bromocresol green) or the use of eosin (sodium tetrabromofluorescein) solution in acetone and tetrachloroethane solvent. After shaking with a citric acid buffer and eosin addition, upon standing the lower layer turns pink if filmer is present. Subsequent titration with Manoxol OT (sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate) quantifies the filmer, with loss of the pink color indicating the end point. 

A sodium sulfosuccinate monoester based on ethoxylated fatty alcohol will contain the substances shown in Table 6. The most important dialkyl sulfosuccinate is a dioctyl sulfosuccinate. Dihexyl sulfosuccinate is used to improve the wetting and spreading characteristics of water-soluble pesticide sprays. In liquid fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides, dioctyl sulfosuccinate will increase their penetrating ability.

The ultralow interfacial tension can be produced by using a combination of two surfactants, one predominantly water soluble (such as sodium dodecyl sulfate) and the other predominantly oil soluble (such as a medium-chain alcohol, e.g., pentanol or hexanol). In some cases, one surfactant may be sufficient to produce the microemulsion, e.g., Aerosol OT (dioctyl sulfosuccinate), which can produce a W/O microemulsions. Nonionic surfactants, such as alcohol ethoxylates, can also produce O/W microemulsions, within a narrow temperature range. As the temperature of the system increases, the interfacial tension decreases, reaching a very low value near the phase inversion temperature. At such temperatures, an O/W microemulsion may be produced.

These show that alkyl chains play an important role in the protein extraction ability. Bulky two-tailed surfactants are favourable in the protein transfer from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, while the other surfactants, having saturated-straight alkyl chains, dioctyl phosphoric acid (DOPA) and dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOC), or a single alkyl chain, monooleyl phosphoric acid (MOLPA), are limited by their solubility into an organic solvent or their ability to form reverse micelles. A tridecyl group in di-tridecyl phosphoric acid (DTDPA) and di-tridecyl sulfosuccinate (ATR) comes from the tridecyl alcohol which includes several isomers, and therefore these surfactants also have bulky tails.
