Diminishing rate

Although it can be fascinating to collect as much data on performance as possible, there will be a diminishing rate of return. Instead, try to focus on the areas where the greatest opportunity for improvement existed, as were identified during your initial assessment. [Pg.130]

In the suspended state, however, no temperature gradient arises at the catalyst surface since the active site temperature is the same as the boiling point of the solution. Only small magnitudes of reaction rates and conversions were obtained in the suspended state because of diminished rate constant k and enlarged retardation constant K (Table 13.2). [Pg.449]

These equations predict a continuously diminishing rate of creep. Many empirical and semi-empirical models of creep-strain have been made and are described by Ward [24], One of these has been used successfully to describe the later stages of creep in polymers such as oriented polyethylene. The Arrhenius equation was modified by Eyring to apply to the rate of creep (deJdt) in the following way ... [Pg.121]

The evaluation of the impact of the different crystal structures on the prediction of the site of metabolism by the MetaSite methodology without reactivity correction has been considered. In this case one can conclude that overall the rate of good prediction (number of experimentally determined sites of metabolism among the first three solutions predicted by MetaSite) is similar for the different structures. Nevertheless, there is only a moderate overlap between the compounds that are well predicted by each crystal structure, and a combination of all structures usually yield higher prediction rates. When using the reactivity correction, the difference between the prediction rates for each crystal structure is reduced, suggesting a diminishing rate of the crystal structure used for the analysis. [Pg.262]

Hc is the initial height corresponding to the critical height at which the constant settling rate gives way to a diminishing rate. [Pg.262]

While the rates of alkaline and pH-independent hydrolysis of [93] and [94] are similar, hydronium ion catalysis is 2500 times less favourable in the case of the cyclic acylal. The large rate difference in comparison with the open chain analogue may reflect the fact that, if a carbonium ion intermediate with a carboxyl group held rigidly adjacent to the carbonium carbon atom were formed in an A-1 reaction, rapid reclosure of the ring would result from recapture of the carbonium carbon by the carboxyl group [equation (55)]. A greatly diminished rate of hydrolysis would result. Perhaps there is a... [Pg.110]

A typical conversion-time curve exhibits a short period of acceleration followed by a nearly constant rate up to 50% conversion or more, then followed in turn by a diminishing rate. The acceleration period is sometimes reported to persist to quite high conversion. Although some... [Pg.411]

The biphasic system was further improved by running the EG telomerization in a three-step mixer settler set-up, to overcome issues with the diminished rate arising from mass transport limitations. The process was run for 30 h with a 75% yield of mono-telomer and palladium leaching limited to only 19 ppm [76]. [Pg.68]

The reaction continues at a rapidly diminishing rate as shown by data in Figure 1. Here the relative rates of depolymerization for a few coals are compared over a 6-hour period. These tests were conducted at reflux temperature (160-170 C) and at comparable phenol catalyst-.coal ratios in the range 50 1 1. No line is drawn for the Knife River lignite coal. Its solutions filter with difficulty and accurate data are difficult to acquire. Data for this coal (solid squares) scatter about the line for the Kaiser Steel coal. [Pg.423]

Figure 23.7 indicates the temperature effects on the yields in the first set of runs. The gas yield increased throughout the temperature range studied. Up to about 750°C, the operating temperature increase rapidly lowered the solid yield and raised both the liquid yield and the total conversion. Beyond this point, the solid yield continued to decrease, but at a highly diminished rate. The liquid yield, on the other hand, began to fall slowly. This may be due to partial decomposition of the expected product styrene. At 750°C the solid, liquid, and gas yields were 47, 32, and 21%, respectively. [Pg.618]

Chemistry, properly supported, will help solve our energy, food, and mineral resource problems, even with our expanding worldwide population (hopefully at a diminished rate). Our endless supply of solar energy will be put to practical use through processes yet to be discovered — direct catalytic conversion to electricity, splitting of water to produce hydrogen fuel, or widespread bioconversion of vegetation and waste products. Chemists will increase the efficiency of extraction of new sources of minerals, and materials scientists will synthesize substitute materials from more abundant supplies. [Pg.15]

Morphine depresses respiration, principally by reducing sensitivity of the respiratory centre to increases in blood PaCOj. With therapeutic doses there is a reduced minute volume first due to diminished rate and then tidal volume. With higher doses carbon dioxide narcosis may develop. In overdose the patient may present with a respiratory rate as low as 2/min. [Pg.334]

The synthesis of a-chain variants might be similarly affected. However, the relative amounts of these variants in heterozygotes differ considerably namely from 5% for Hb-Ft. Worth (a 27 Glu Gly) to some 36-40% for many other a chain variants. Recent studies have indicated that indeed the abnormal a chain is synthesized at a diminished rate compared to the chain in both reticulocytes and nucleated red cells of patients heterozygous for the a chain variant I-Philadelphia or a 16-A14 (Lys-> Glu) (E6). Another possible explanation for a low quantity of a chain variants in heterozygotes is based on the assump-... [Pg.185]

The power of AES to identify the true nature of the surface of a working catalyst has been demonstrated by Dwyer and Somorjai." They used an apparatus in which the polycrystalline foil could be used as a catalyst for CO/H2 and CO2/H2 reactions at 6 atmospheres pressure. Clean iron at 300 °C gave CH4, 85%, and other C2 to C5 hydrocarbons in small amounts. It rapidly became covered with 1 monolayer of C with a reduction in rate. When multilayers of C had formed, methane alone was produced by H2/CO, but at a further-diminished rate. The H2/CO2 reaction on initially clean Fe produced 97% methane and a marked increase in methanation rate. Both C and O accumulated on the surface during this reaction. The authors point out that in the case of the H2/CO reaction the monolayer carbon may not be the active catalyst. There is one piece of evidence in their work which points to Fe, perhaps in clusters, being the active site. They studied the CO/H2 reaction on pre-oxidized Fe and... [Pg.29]
