Materials that promote the decomposition of organic hydroperoxide to form stable products rather than chain-initiating free radicals are known as peroxide decomposers. Amongst the materials that function in this way may be included a number of mercaptans, sulphonic acids, zinc dialkylthiophosphate and zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate. There is also evidence that some of the phenol and aryl amine chain-breaking antioxidants may function in addition by this mechanism. In saturated hydrocarbon polymers diauryl thiodipropionate has achieved a preeminent position as a peroxide decomposer.

Thiophenols may also be synthesized via the photochemical decomposition route 156). Thus, treatment of arylthallium ditrifluoroacetates with an aqueous solution of potassium Ar,AT-dimethyldithiocarbamate led in quantitative yields to the formation of the corresponding aryl AT,A -dimethyl-dithiocarbamates. Subsequent photolysis in aqueous acetone then led to disulfides which were reduced to the thiophenols. A small amount of aryldithiocarbamate formed as a by-product in the photolysis was converted to the same thiophenol by hydrolysis. The overall reaction sequence is illustrated in Eq. (18). 

Another type of mixed ligand technetium or rhenium complexes in the above sense contains two or more monodentate ligands (Fig. 26b). The six-coordinated polypyridyl-thiolato complexes of rhenium(V) [ReO(terpy)(SR)2] + [186] are an example. Further representatives are a variety of mixed-ligand complexes, combining tetramethylthiourea with dimethyldithiocarbamate [TcO(tu)2-((CH3)2NCSS)]2+ [194],... 

The C-14 labelled trimethyllead cation was recovered from the aqueous phase by adding dimethyldithiocarbamate (DMDTC) in hexane to form a trimethyllead-DMDTC complex. After the latter had been purified on preparative polyamide-6 TLC plates, the (14CH3)(CH3)2PbCl was obtained by treating the pure C-14 labelled (CH3)3Pb-DMDTC complex with HC1. 

The lead-210 labelled chlorotrimethylplumbane was prepared by adding HC1 to the tetramethyllead-210 at 0 °C. The crude product was treated with the complexometric agent dimethyldithiocarbamate and the trimethyllead-210-DMDTC complex was purified by preparative TLC. Addition of HC1 to the pure lead-210 labelled Me3Pb-DMDTC complex yielded the desired lead-210 labelled Me3PbCl. 

Biological. Odeyemi and Alexander (1977) isolated three strains of Rhizobium sp. that degraded thiram. One of these strains, Rhizobium meliloti, metabolized thiram to dimethylamine (DMA) and carbon disulfide, which formed spontaneously from dimethyldithiocarbamate (DMDT). The conversion of DMDT to DMA and carbon disulfide occurred via enzymatic and nonenzymatic mechanisms. 

When thiram (100 ppm) was inoculated with activated sludge (30 ppm) at 25 °C and pH 7.0 for 2 wk, 30% degraded. Metabolites included methionine, elemental sulfur, formaldehyde, dimethyldithiocarbamate-a-aminobutyric acid, and the corresponding keto acid (Kawasaki, 1980).

Concerning the M=Co, bond, most of the reported examples result from inter- or intramolecular additions of anionic nucleophiles containing at least two reactive heteroatoms. Thus, sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate was found to react with the cationic allenylidene [RuTp(=C=C=CPh2)(PPh3)2] [PFg] (76) to generate the alle-nyl-metallacycle 77 (Scheme 26) as the result of the nucleophilic addition of one of the sulfur atoms at the Cq, carbon and subsequent coordination of the second sulfur to the ruthenium center, with concomitant release of a triphenylphosphine ligand [282]. Complex 77 could also be synthesized by treatment of the neutral derivative... 

RuTpCl(=C=C=CPh2)(PPh3)] with Na[S2CNMe2]. The cycloaddition of the dimethyldithiocarbamate anion to the Ru=C bond of [Ru tc (5,5)-S2CNMe2 (=C=C=CPh2)(CO)(PPh3)2] [PFsJ has also been described [282].
