Nowhere is this concern with individual rights more crucial than in questions concerning the justice of energy policy. Distributive justice demands that the benefits and burdens of energy policy be distributed in ways that respect the equal dignity and worth of every individual. A prims facie violation of justice occurs when social benefits and burdens are distributed unequally. Particularly troubling inequalities occur when the benefits of policy go to the powerful and wealthy, while the burdens are distributed primarily among the poor and less powerful. [Pg.489]

A typical laboratory will produce many types of reports. If a computer is available, these will come forth almost automatically. If not, they will have to be typed. In a typical case, an analysis report, for instance, will be written up by hand, taken to the ofBce for typing, and returned for checking and signature. Typing a report in the laboratory will save time and effort but, unfortunately, many professionals consider it beneath their dignity to operate a typewriter, though not a computer, which uses essentially the same techniques. Longer reports will usually be typed by a secretary, often from hand written notes. [Pg.112]

Don Francisco went back to Granada to spend his final years. There, he still kept an interest in a fraction of his father s land which he had inherited. In 1981, his health visibly declined, and cancer of the intestines was diagnosed. He had to sutler two major operations which were of no avail, and finally he accepted his fate with great fortitude and dignity. Don Francisco spent the following trying months surrounded by his closest relatives, receiving the most devoted care from his wife. He died on November 19, 1983. [Pg.16]

Man is ideally a governor, not a producer of energy for at least two good reasons for a matter of human dignity (it is preposterous to insist that man should do the work that can be done by a donkey or a machine) and because man-developed energy is enormously more polluting than any other. This apart, any consideration on work affects economy and productivity. [Pg.68]

Professionals working with a suicidal drug client may wish to determine whether the person meets criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline clients often have a history of suicidal behavior and high utilization of health and mental health care services. Most people who meet criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder are women, but not all. As mentioned, some professionals find it difficult to work with borderline clients without becoming very upset or cynical. If you cannot work with such a client respectfully, then it is recommended that a referral be made to someone who can (see Chapter 3). Treating the client with dignity is important if trust and a solid therapeutic alliance are to develop. [Pg.67]

In the few hours I spent with Carolyn, I was blessed by her humor, sadness, dignity, humility, inspiration and grace. My brief encounter with her illustrates some of the seriousness and the subtleties of MCS, and the frustration of people with this illness—and those who interact with them—when extensive planning and precautions still end with spoiled plans. [Pg.127]

With an older population, higher demand, increasing cost and limited resources we have problems to satisfy all needs and priorities. These priorities and decisions are hard to do for the practitioner in relation to the patient and to the society. Priorities should be based on the three ethical principles (human dignity, needs and solidarity, cost-effectiveness) described in Box 3.7. Greater needs (severe diseases and low quality of life) and the weakest people (i.e. the elderly) should have priorities. Cost-effectiveness principles should only be used when comparing treatment methods for the same disease. [Pg.32]

Human dignity principle every individual should have equal value and equal rights of personal characteristics and functions in society Needs and solidarity principle resources should be committed to the people or activities having the greatest need... [Pg.33]

The King shares his royal dignity with noble Venus, and appears in splendid state, surrounded by all the dignitaries of his court. Before him is borne a beautiful crimson banner, in which there is an embroidered representation of Charity in green garments. Saturn is the prefect of the royal household, and in front of him Astronomy bears a black standard, with a representation of Faith in yellow and red garments. [Pg.61]

Too shocked by this outburst to reply, Elisas eyes brimmed with tears as Cagliostro continued with awful ferocity Now, hypocrite, answer me. Why have you fallen silent all of a sudden So you know nothing about X Choking back her emotions, Elisa summoned all her dignity ... [Pg.66]

Cagliostro was dismayed. I forgive you your incredulity and ignorance. .. because you are only a child in the order, in spite of all your Masonic grades, he said with dignity. If I wished, I could make you tremble. ... [Pg.85]

Cagliostro, too, was at his most impressive his dignity and eloquence pleased nearly everyone. He immediately began to operate a popular healing clinic, working for almost the only time in his life in comfortable cooperation with local doctors and hospitals. He didn t bluster and rant at doubters, as he d done with Major Heyking in Saint Petersburg, but wooed them with charm and demonstrations of occult skill. [Pg.104]

In the years to come she would openly accuse Marie-Antoinette of the same sin. This was one of the malicious charges that contributed to the queens demise. Jim Casey built UPS over a fifty-year period with a distinct and well-defined culture which continues today. That culture embraced the values of integrity, quality, dignity, respect, stewardship, partnership, equality, and humility. To understand UPS you must understand Jim Casey, a man who went to work at age nine because his father was ill and a man who founded UPS as an entrepreneur at age nineteen. He became a self-made success, rising from a humble background and never forgetting his roots. He never forgot to treat every individual and employee with the dignity and respect each is due. [Pg.41]

Composer John Williams has many success traits. The long and high t-bars reveal his self-confidence. The extra tall t-stems show us he is full of pride and dignity. People with this level of pride tend to be sharp dressers and are concerned with their reputation. [Pg.72]

The height of the "d" also has significance. A short d-stem height means you re very independent in the way you think and in the way you make decisions. If it s really, really tall, it means you have a high dose of pride, dignity, self-respect, or even vanity. People with tall skinny d-stems tend to dress very sharp. Tall skinny d-stems indicate a preoccupation with their "image." Yet the same person often doesn t give a flip about the criticism from just one individual. [Pg.128]

Shown in the t and d-stems Uiat are retraced and taller man normal, l nese writers will demand respect and expect you to treat mem with dignity. [Pg.153]

His mouth shrank to a pinhole and his eyes to slits. You think I m a common sbirro Any time I have exposed a murderer it has been because I needed to know his identity for some other, more worthy reason. Not hue at all, but he likes to think that unmasking criminals is beneath a philosopher s dignity. Talk to the Signori di Notte. Or go directly to the Ten. He dropped his gaze to the book on his lap, believing that he had just ended the conversation. [Pg.7]

It is the duty of the physician in medical research to protect the life, health, privacy, and dignity of the human subject. [Pg.724]
