Digital projectors

In spatial AR environments the computergenerated synthetic information is projected on real objects using digital projectors. The users often do not have direct interaction using a tactile input device and therefore do not have to carry around any technology. The information projected on the real objects is visible for all people with a line of sight and are not user specific.

Microfabricated devices capable of switching optical light beams, also termed MOEMS, have gained attention about a decade ago for applications like optical fiber switches, microscanners, or digital micromirror arrays. Particularly, the latter devices have found widespread application in video projection systems for office presentations, home cinema, and very recently, the replacement of classical projectors in movie theaters. Other applications, for example, for head-up displays on auto windscreens are in development. In all cases, arrays of small micromirrors are used for the modulation of light. 

Ims ing is as old as the human race. Static graphics have historically been the norm up to the invention of the devices that could make a series of still pictures appear to move. The invention of celluloid in the late nineteenth century provided the material for photographic film, with the invention of motion picture cameras and projectors to follow. Animated films, commonly known as cartoons, have been produced since the early twentieth century by repeatedly photographing a series of hand-drawn cels. With the development of the digital computer and color displays in the last half of the century, it became possible to generate images without the need for hand-drawn intermediaries. 

The DMD chip has become the key element of modern digital display projector technology. Up to now there is almost a monopoly situation for this device, which is reflected by the pricing policy. 

Daly et al. (1982) combined the projector with a digitizer tablet, hi doing this they were able to indicate the landmarks that were automatically recorded by the computer. This procedure increased the speed of measurements, their precision and their repeatability, and eliminated errors related to data input or calculations. 

Compatibility with existing practices using a data projector and digital slides.
