Digital imaging

It is particularly in the serial inspection of castings, that radioscopy constitutes state-of-the-art when applied in conjunction with systems for image intensification, digital image processing and automatic image evaluation. For the examination of welds, however, standardization is still non-existent, thus rendering more difficult the application of this inspection technique.As a consequence the approval procedures of the respective supervisory or certification boards are often complicated and of necessity set up for each individual case.

Imaging plates are exposed similar to radiographic films. They are read out by a LASER-scanner to a digital image without any developing process. After optical erasing of the virtual picture the same IP can be used cyclic up to more than 1000 times. The life time is limited by the mechanical stability of the IP s. An IP consists of a flexible polymer carrier which is coated with the sensitive layer. This layer is covered with a thin transparent protective foil.

The recorded digital image is processed by a PC computer. Typical operations are image magnification, contrast stretcliing and false colouring, image substraction or addition, determination and evaluation of profiles. 

The capillary rise on a Wilhelmy plate (Section II-6C) is a nice means to obtain contact angles by measurement of the height, h, of the meniscus on a partially immersed plate (see Fig. 11-14) [111, 112]. Neumann has automated this technique to replace manual measurement of h with digital image analysis to obtain an accuracy of 0.06° (and a repeatability to 95%, in practice, of 0.01°) [108]. The use of high purity selenium in digital imaging is considered a potential market. Selenium-based plates can be used to replace conventional silver-based x-ray film, and in 1994 the Xerox Corporation introduced a selenium-based product, Verdefilm, for use in graphic arts appHcations. 

Popular methods for mutual diffusion measurements in fluid systems are the Taylor dispersion method and interferometric methods, such as Digital Image Holography [13, 14].

Pd on Carbon. The catalyst analyzed here is a commercial hydrogenation catalyst with 5% Pd supported on activated carbon (Alfa). The catalyst was ground in a mortar and pestle and dispersed dry onto a carbon coated Cu grid. While x-ray spectra from heavy metal particles down to 2nm in diameter can be obtained (O by manually directing the electron beam to the particle, digital images of Pd particles at high resolution have not been obtained previously.
