There is no standard aeration-tank shape or size. Aeration tanks can be round, square, or rectangular. Shallow aeration tanks are more difficult to mix than deeper tanks. Yet aeration-tank depths have ranged from 0.6 m (2 ft) to 18 m (60 ft). The oxidation-ditch systems tend to be shallow, while some high-rate diffused-aeration systems have used veiy deep tanks to provide more efficient oxygen transfer. 

For organic contaminant removal from surface water packed-tower aeration, granular activated carbon (GAC), powdered activated carbon (PAC), diffused aeration, advanced oxidation processes, and reverse osmosis (RO). 

In diffusing aerated confections under heating conditions, if the material can be processed at a high temperature, the bubble structure, after emerging from the diffusion chamber, will contract the air cell upon cooling, and thus become even smaller. 

There are many methods to introduce fresh air for air stripping, including diffused aeration, tray aerators, spray basins, and packed-towers methods.

Industrial hazardous wastewater can be treated aerobically in suspended biomass stirred-tank bioreactors, plug-flow bioreactors, rotating-disc contactors, packed-bed fixed-biofilm reactors (or biofilters), fluidized bed reactors, diffused aeration tanks, airlift bioreactors, jet bioreactors, membrane bioreactors, and upflow bed reactors [28,30]. 

Aeration basins are wastewater ponds or lagoons that have air introduced by mechanical action. Aeration may be performed to assist aerobic bioremediation and/or to remove volatile organic compounds. In an aeration basin, oxygen is usually supplied by surface aerators or by diffused aeration units. The action of the aerators and that of the rising air bubbles from the diffuser is used to keep the contents of the basin in suspension. Aeration is widely used in wastewater treatment and can be adapted to treat groundwater. 

There are many commercially available air stripper technologies. There are several different types of air strippers, including packed towers, tray-type, spray aerators, mist aerators, diffused aerators, low-profile packed towers, and centrifugal air strippers. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an estimated 1000 air stripping units were operational at sites throughout the United States in 1991 (see Table 1).

A construction and operating cost comparison between Mixflo technology and tine bubble diffuser aeration is presented in Table 1. 

Short-circuiting is one of the major problems associated with mechanical aeration equipment. Combined mechanical- and diffused-aeration systems have enjoyed some popularity for industrial-waste systems that treat variable organic loads. The mechanical mixers provide the fluid mixing with the diffused aeration varied for different oxygen-transfer rates.
