When adopting standards in March of 1985, EPA emphasized its optimism that the particulate standards would be achieveable in spite of the limited work done to date by heavy truck manufacturers. First, the Agency noted that "review of new information submitted on the subject of trap oxidizer feasibility indicates for light duty diesels, continued progress has been made in solving the various technical difficulties associated with traps. Daimler-Benz has already introduced traps on light duty vehicles in California, and Volkswagen and other manufacturers will do so in the... [Pg.61]

The experimental conditions used to determine the CFPP do not exactly reflect those observed in vehicles the differences are due to the spaces in the filter mesh which are much larger in the laboratory filter, the back-pressure and the cooling rate. Also, research is continuing on procedures that are more representative of the actual behavior of diesel fuel in a vehicle and which correlate better with the temperature said to be operability , the threshold value for the Incident. In 1993, the CEN looked at two new methods, one called SFPP proposed by Exxon Chemicals (David et al., 1993), the other called AGELFI and recommended by Agip, Elf and Fina (Hamon et al., 1993). [Pg.215]

At the end of the 1960 s, oil refining underwent significant transformation linked to the continuous increase in the need for light products (gasoline-diesel oil) at the expense of heavy products (fuel-oils) as shown in Table 10.1. [Pg.365]

The California bus program was mn at Golden Gate Transit District (GGTD) and continued through late 1990 (49). M.A.N. suppHed two European SU 240 coaches for this project, one diesel powered and one methanol powered. DDC provided a GM RTS coach powered by methanol. [Pg.429]

Furnaces of this type, such as the steam locomotive furnace—boHet design, had the obvious disadvantage that pressure was limited to ca 1 MPa (150 psi). The development of seamless, thick-waH tubing for stationary power plants (ie, water-tube furnaces) and other engines for motive power, such as diesel—electric, has in many cases ecHpsed the fire-tube boHet. For appHcations calling for moderate amounts of lower pressure steam, however, the modern fire-tube boHet continues to be the indicated choice (5). [Pg.140]

Many redundant safety features were provided at the SRP. These included a moderator dump tank, gadolinium nitrate solution as emergency absorber, continuously mnning diesel generators, and a 95 x 10 -L (25 x 10 -gal) elevated water tank for each reactor, for assurance of cooling. [Pg.219]

Oil-Based Muds. Oil-based drilling fluids have diesel or mineral oil (11) as a continuous phase with both internal water and soHd phases. [Pg.175]

Emulsifiers are incorporated in oil and synthetic mud formulations to maintain a stable emulsion of the internal brine phase. These materials include calcium and magnesium soaps of fatty acids and polyamines and amides and their mixtures (123,127). The specific chemistry of these additives depends on the nature of the continuous phase of the mud, ie, whether diesel oil, mineral oil, or a synthetic Hquid. Lime is added along with the fatty acid to form the... [Pg.182]

These catalysts contained promoters to minimise SO2 oxidation. Second-generation systems are based on a combined oxidation catalyst and particulate trap to remove HC and CO, and to alleviate particulate emissions on a continuous basis. The next phase will be the development of advanced catalysts for NO removal under oxidising conditions. Low or 2ero sulfur diesel fuel will be an advantage in overall system development. [Pg.173]

With binary copper—lead, the continuous copper phase provides the primary load support while pockets of 20—50% lead supply a continuous lead surface film. Tin content of 3—5% is commonly incorporated with the lead to minimi2e corrosion. Copper—lead alloys, either cast or sintered on a steel back, provide good fatigue resistance for heavy-duty main and connecting rod bearings for auto, tmck, diesel, and aircraft engines. [Pg.4]

In inaccessible regions where an impressed current installation is not sufficiently close to a low voltage supply, the protection current can be supplied from batteries, thermogenerators, and if there is sufficient radiation from the sun, solar cells. Wind generators and diesel units, on the other hand, are less suitable because of the maintenance necessary for continuous operation. [Pg.237]

EPRI NP-2433 addresses diesel generator reliability at nuclear power plants. The sources include plant records, utility records, and LERs. The report gives frequency of failure to start, failure. o continue running, and mean repair times. [Pg.157]

The accident resulted from a routine safety test of some electrical control equipment at the start of a normal reactor shutdown for routine maintenance. The test was to determine the ability to continue to draw electrical power from a turbine generator during the first minute of coast-down following a station blackout. In a blackout, the reactor automatically scrams and diesel generators start to assume load (about 1 minute required). [Pg.224]

In yet another incident a hydraulie hose leaked, and an oil mist was sueked into the air inlet of a diesel engine. It continued to run for three to five minutes after the normal fuel supply was isolated. The air filter on the engine was missing. Had it been present, it would probably have trapped the oil mist [23]. [Pg.347]
