The anti-HSV-1 activity of Ca-SP was assessed by plaque yield reduction and compared with those of dextran sulphate as a representative sulphated PS. These data indicate that Ca-SP is a potent antiviral agent against HSV-1, as even at low concentrations of Ca-SP, no enhancement of virus-induced syncytium formation was observed, as occurred in dextran sulphate-treated cultures. Reeently, Lee et al. [73] investigated the effects of structural modifications of Ca-SP on antiviral activity. Calcium ion binding with the anionic part of the molecule was replaeed with various metal cations, and their inhibitory effects on the replication of HSV-1 were evaluated. Replacement of calcium ion with sodium and potassium ions maintained the antiviral activity, while divalent and trivalent metal cations reduced the activity. Depolymerization of sodium spirulan with hydrogen peroxide decreased the antiviral activity as its molecular weight decreased.

Jensenius et al. (1981) reported two methods which circumvent many of the earlier problems for the isolation of IgY. The yolk, of which 50% is non-aqueous, is separated from the egg white and its membrane is cut open. The yolk (20 ml) is diluted with 80 ml TBS (10 mM Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.4, and 140 mM NaCl), and may be stored for several months in the cold in the presence of 0.1% NaNj. Any precipitate formed is removed by centrifugation and 6.0 ml 10% (w/v) dextran sulphate (Pharmacia) in TBS is added, under mixing. Excess of dextran sulphate is precipitated with 15 ml 1 M CaCl2. The precipitate is extracted with 50 ml TBS to recover any protein carried with the precipitate. IgY is then recovered from the combined supernatants by the method given in Section...

Single injections of heparin in mice result in significant inhibition of the acid alkaline ribonuclease of the liver after the injection. This probably explains the accumulation of ribonucleic acid in tissue culture cells in the presence of heparin. Heparin also inhibits rat acid phosphatase, glucuronidase , catalase , fumarase and elastase.
