Devil possession

In the early Christian Middle Ages, however, a tradition arose that had a beneficial impact on the mentally ill, despite the fanaticism and incitement of later centuries the tradition of mercy. Prayers were said for the possessed and the Church initially saw itself as a haven for the insane and epileptics also. Only in the eleventh century were some madmen considered to be envoys of the devil, to be combated by all available means in the fourteenth century there was a change to isolating the insane from the healthy population in lunatic asylums and madhouses. Therapeutic measures for those isolated in this way were superfluous at that time, especially as those who knew about herbs and poisons were often themselves suspected of being witches (Duerr, 1979). [Pg.31]

The scene begins with the avocatori investigating the papers put into their hands by Voltore. They appear to be so incriminating that no last-minute action by Volpone will stay the hand of disaster. However, when Volpone suggests possession by the devil, Voltore, always the great performer, falls into a faint. Much good theatrical fun can be gained from this sequence by experienced comics. Voltore s sudden recovery, almost without the proper theatrical transition, must be carefully timed. The cliche "Where am I " is impossible to believe, but the avocatori never doubt the vulture s sincerity. [Pg.33]

The suspicion that, in the final analysis, mental illness is a disease sui generis, unique among diseases, is confirmed by the fact that it is the only disease believed to be capable of causing and excusing crime. In possessing this property, mental illness combines functions previously attributed to the Devil and God. Also, mental illness is the only disease that justifies, as hospitalization, the preventive detention of persons deemed dangerous to themselves and/or others and the incarceration of persons deemed to be sexual predators who have served their prison sentences. [Pg.95]
