In this chapter we focus on two electrochemically relevant, active polymer types ionically conductive polymers and electronically conductive polymers, and discuss new developments emerging in their context. 

In 1965 1967 a great interest has been attached to the possible role of free radicals in cancer after studies by Emanuel and his coworkers who reported the excessive production of free radicals in tumor cells (see, for example, Ref. [145]). On these grounds the authors suggested to apply antioxidant therapy for the treatment of cancer patients. Unfortunately, experimental proofs of overproduction of free radicals in cancer tissue turn out to be erroneous [146], A new interest in the role of free radicals in cancer development emerged after the discovery of superoxide and superoxide dismutases. 

Regional Medical Centers. They can be Primary or Secondary -depending on the size and type of organization. These can be district hospitals with developed emergency units.

Develop emergency strategies specific to actual chemical reaction systems... 

Occasionally, the U.S. EPA issues a process safety alert or study that is related to chemical reactivity hazards. The following incident summaries are from a Case Study on phenol-formaldehyde reaction hazards (EPA 1999a) and from an Alert urging the use of multiple data sources when developing emergency response strategies (EPA 1999b). 

The focus of this chapter is to trace the origin and nature of the major pollution (especially water) problems within the pulp and paper industries and to present an overview of the pollution mitigation strategies and technologies that are currently in practice or being developed (emerging technologies). 

Milk fat contains several compounds that have demonstrated anticancer activity in animal models. The more important ones are rumenic acid, a potent inhibitor of mammary tumorigenesis, sphingomyelin and other sphingolipids that prevent the development of intestinal tumors and butyric acid, which prevents colon and mammary tumor development. Emerging evidence suggests that milk fat can prevent intestinal infections, particularly in children, prevent allergic disorders, such as asthma and improve the level of long-chain co-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in blood. 

Alternate Control Centers. Recognizing the unpredictable nature of a developing emergency, it is advisable to select at least one alternate on-site main control center. Both the MECC and the alternate on-site center should have backup power supplies.
