It must also be recognized that adhesive interfaces are not static entities, but may deteriorate or even strengthen over time, and often it is the time course of interfacial strength or durability under different conditions and in different environments that is of greatest concern [4]. As important as durability issues are, they too will not be a direct concern of this chapter. [Pg.3]

The durability of a building (i.e. its life expectancy and its resistance to deterioration) is determined by deliberate design decisions relating to stmcture and choice of materials as much as to the natural or precipitate process of ageing. Within certain limits, the design of an industrial building can and should take into account the predicted use or lifespan of the process or method of operation which it is to accommodate. To aim at durability beyond that has ascertainable cost implications. These may be acceptable if the building is to serve future known or even unpredictable purposes. [Pg.56]

Although vitreous silica is nominally a homogeneous isotropic amorphous material, and should normally remain so during its service life, it is in fact in a metastable condition. The tendency to revert to crystalline forms with attendant deterioration in mechanical durability places severe limitations on the range of applications. Figure 18.2 illustrates the polymorphic forms of silica, and the dimensional changes accompanying each transition. [Pg.888]

Performance of polymers during use is a key feature of any composite material, which decides the real fate of products in outdoor applications. Whatever the application, there is concern regarding the durability of polymers, partly because of their useful lifetime, maintenance and replacement. The deterioration of these materials depends on the duration and extent of interaction with the environment (Homminga et ah, 2005). [Pg.31]

The highly dispersible calix[4]arene neutral carriers can also improve the durability for neutral-carrier-type ion sensors. Time-course changes in both sensitivity (slope for Na+ calibration graph) and selectivity (selectivity coefficient for Na" " with respect to K+) were followed in the Na -ISFETs based on ion-sensing membranes of silicone rubber-(l), plasticized PVC-(l), and plasticized PVC-(2) (Fig. 2). Deterioration proceeded quite quickly in the Na -ISFETs of plasticized PVC-(2) both the Na+ sensitivity and selectivity... [Pg.589]

This presentation will discuss the membrane performance and its physical and chemical changes under unfavourable conditions. This kind of studies will give us information on trouble-shooting counter-measures for unexpected membrane deteriorations, and on the durability of a cellulose acetate membrane under adverse conditions. [Pg.79]

In the meantime, the mental condition of Carothers deteriorated inexorably. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1936. But he had another breakdown in the summer of 1936, and finally, in April 1937, he committed suicide with cyanide in a Philadelphia hotel room. At Christmas 1937, the Van Raalte Mill in New Jersey finally turned out full-fashioned hosiery with excellent appearance and free of defects. They distributed 56 hosiery and lingerie garments to wives of the men on the nylon project. The majority of the women thought that the stockings were very durable, but they wrinkled too easily and were too lustrous and slippery. [Pg.37]

The subsequent hardened state during the life of the structure where the concrete material must fulfill its structural or aesthetic role without deterioration. It is important that the durability of the concrete should not be adversely affected by the presence of a water-reducing admixture. [Pg.62]

It can be concluded from the assessment of the data in this section that inclusion into a concrete mix of a water-reducing admixture of the lignosulfonate, hydroxycarboxylic acid and air-entraining type should not lead to any deterioration in the durability of that concrete to freeze-thaw cycling. Indeed there are strong indications that, when used either as a means of reducing the water-cement ratio or, alternatively, of reducing the cement content, more durable concrete may result. [Pg.102]

In sulphur concretes, the mechanism of deterioration caused by frost action has been attributed to entirely different causes to those above. The material has low permeability to moisture and as water is not used in mixing, it was not considered that water played a major role in deterioration. Sulphur has a very high coefficient of thermal expansion (a - 55 x 10 6/°C) and low thermal conductivity (0.27 W/m K). Hence the poor durability performance in cyclical freezing and thawing has been attributed to the development of high stresses due to thermal gradients (5,... [Pg.139]

This boron- and carbon-doped SiC exhibits excellent strength and stiffness, extreme hardness, and thermal and chemical resistance. The strength of this system is not affected by temperatures up to 1650°C. Creep is virtually nonexistent up to 1400°C. Cyclic durability testing conducted at 1370°C in air showed no deterioration of strength after 3500 h (94). [Pg.466]
