Loads monitoring has another economic aspect. The seabed protection in the form of mattress, made of single elements, pinned and tight together with ropes, should be repaired immediately after the damage of a few elements because the next excess of loads can result in extensive damage. The cost of not detected repair can include replacement of several dozen elements and delays in berth operation. [Pg.892]

Representative set of weldments was examined site welds (with pearlitic type weld metal) and two types of site weld repair zones with different welding technologies using Cr-Ni filler metals and Ni-based alloy. Results of AUGUR 4.2 inspection were compared with manual ultrasonic inspection ones in terms of defect detection, characterization, positioning and sizing in order to estimate correlation between these data. [Pg.195]

AUQUR 4.2 revealed a number of small-size defects with the height of about 2 mm did not detected by manual inspection. These flaws were located near the boundaries of cut-off zone of repaired welds and likely had originated after near-boundary passes of repair welding [3]. [Pg.196]

Periodical verification" enables, by annual measurements on the particular flaw detector itself, to detect any non acceptable deviation of characteristics. These verifications are also performed at the delivery of the flaw detector, or at the occasion of repair. [Pg.701]

MaintainabiUty is a characteristic of design, installation, and operation, usually expressed as the probabiUty that a system can be restored to specified operable conditions within a specified interval of time when maintenance is performed in accordance with prescribed procedures. The ease of fault detection, isolation, and repair are all influenced by system design and are principal factors contributing to maintainabiUty. Also contributing is the supply of spare parts, the supporting repair organization, and preventative maintenance practices. MaintainabiUty must be designed into the equipment. Some factors to consider foUow. [Pg.5]

Serviceability. ServiceabiUty is defined as the degree of ease (or difficulty) with which a system can be repaired. This measure specifically considers fault detection, isolation, and repair. RepairabiUty considers only the actual repair time, and is defined as the probabiUty that a failed system is restored to operation in a specified interval of active repair time. Access covers, plug-in modules, or other features to allow easy removal and replacement of failed components improve the repairabihty and serviceabihty (see also Electrical connectors). [Pg.5]

In the simplest terms, a fault-tree for risk analysis requires the following information probabiUty of detection of a particular anomaly for an NDE system, repair or replacement decision for an item judged defective, probabiUty of failure of the anomaly, cost of failure, cost of inspection, and cost of repair. Implementation of a risk-based inspection system should lead to an overall improvement in the inspection costs as well as in the safety in operation for a plant, component, or a system. Unless the database is well estabUshed, however, costs may fluctuate considerably. [Pg.123]

Both differential and ground relaying detect ground faults. Ground-fault protection is located at the starter and protects the cable and the motor differential CTs are located at the motor and protect the motor only. Economic priorities indicate ground-fault protec tion first, adding differential protection when justified by potential savings in downtime and repair costs. [Pg.2491]

Does the Toller use a primary ozone depleting compound (ODC, for example, a CFC or 1,1,1, -trichloroethane) m their process Are ODC management practices followed (for example no uncontrolled releases of ODCs, installation of capture and recycle equipment, leak detection and repair, use of well trained personnel) ... [Pg.167]

The motor makes rumbling noise and the stator eurrent fluctuates. The rotor circuit may be broken and should be repaired. If the motor also overheats, there may be an inter-turn fault or a short-circuit between the phases. Detect these and rectify if possible, otherwise rewind the motor. [Pg.240]

It is worrying that a vessel which is safe when it enters service may become unsafe by slow crack growth - either by fatigue or by stress corrosion. If the consequences of catastrophic failure are very serious, then additional safety can be gained by designing the vessel so that it will leak before it breaks (like the partly inflated balloon of Chapter 13). Leaks are easy to detect, and a leaking vessel can be taken out of service and repaired. How do we formulate this leak-before-break condition ... [Pg.160]

In one incident, the laboratory staff were asked to analyze the atmosphere in a tanker to see if any hydrocarbon was present. The staff regularly analyzed the atmosphere inside LPG tank trucks to see if any oxygen was present. Owing to a misunderstanding they assumed that an oxygen analysis was required on this occasion and reported over the phone that "none had been detected." The worker assumed that no hydrocarbon had been detected and sent the tank truck for repair. Fortunately the garage carried out their own check analysis. [Pg.144]

Coatings (e.g. paints) applied to metal surfaces can be extremely effective in containing the corrosion of the substrate in many environments. This is particularly true for steel in natural environments. However, no freshly applied coating is entirely free from defects and so there will always be small areas which are exposed directly to the corrosive environment. It is possible to reduce, but not eliminate, these defects by paying attention to workmanship. In practice, it becomes increasingly expensive to achieve fewer and fewer defects because of the need for high grade inspection, and the detection and repair of individual defects. [Pg.126]
