Detector types intrinsic

Beta detection should not be ignored. Beta rays do not produce features as distinctive as those produced by photons (bremsstrahlung excepted), but if they reach the sensitive volume of the detector they are equally effective in removing a full-energy event from its spectral peak. For many detectors, such as p-type intrinsic Ge detectors, the layer of dead Ge maybe sufficient... [Pg.2277]

Synthetic, nonionic polymers generally elute with little or no adsorption on TSK-PW columns. Characterization of these polymers has been demonstrated successfully using four types of on-line detectors. These include differential refractive index (DRI), differential viscometry (DV), FALLS, and MALLS detection (4-8). Absolute molecular weight, root mean square (RMS) radius of gyration, conformational coefficients, and intrinsic viscosity distributions have... [Pg.562]

The alternative approach to detection and analysis incorporates a solid state detector and a multichannel pulse height analysis system. The crystals used are of silicon (of the highly pure intrinsic type), or the lithium drift principle (p. 463 etseq.) is utilized. All emitted radiations are presented to the detector simultaneously and a spectrum is generated from an electronic analysis of the mixture of voltage pulses produced. Chapter 10 contains a more detailed account of pulse height analysis and solid state detectors. Production of an X-ray spectrum in this way is sometimes known as energy dispersive analysis ofX-rays (EDAX) and where an electron microscope is employed as SEM-EDAX. [Pg.347]

Cross-sections through typical semiconductor radiation detectors. The same geometry is used for both intrinsic and semiconductor types. [Pg.464]

A third type of detector is the intrinsic or native fluorescence detector that utilizes native fluorescence properties of amino acids. The sensitivity of this detector is between UV/PDA and LIF detection. The advantage of this technique over pre-labeling is that there is no pre-labeling step required therefore, the sample preparation is relatively simple, and the sensitivity is improved over UV/LIF. However, the intrinsic fluorescence detection relies on the presence of Tryptophan (Try), Tyrosine (Tyr), Phenylalanine (Phe), and this detector has just become commercially available. [Pg.370]

The above exceptions leave relatively few sensors based on integrated separation and detection, particularly of the types involving gas-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces, which require the detector to be responsive to the gas or ion (molecule) transferred across the membrane. The scope of liquid-solid interactions is somewhat broader as it enables not only retention of the analyte and monitoring of some intrinsic property, but also to retain a product of a previous reaction, thereby substantially expanding the possibilities. [Pg.202]

In a second embodiment the strip detectors A to H are mounted on an intrinsic p-type silicon substrate 3A covered by a silicon oxide layer 3B. A patterned arrangement of conductor tracks 21 is formed in the semiconductor base 3B. Each track is formed by diffusion or ion-implantation of an n-type dopant material, and isolated from adjacent tracks by means of a channel stop network 23. Bridging links of nichrome-gold are formed to define and connect the read-out regions to the tracks 21. The links 25 are paired and thus provide voltage detection contacts. The tracks 21 are connected to connection pads 29. Signal processing circuitry is incorporated in the semiconductor base layer 3B. [Pg.32]

The efficiency of the detection system is based on both detector and sample parameters. Detector parameters include the intrinsic detector efficiency, the geometric relation of detector to sample, scattering by the sample support and nearby material, and attenuation between the sample and the detector. Sample parameters include material stopping power based on composition, mass, diameter and thickness type and amount of sample cover and backing and radiation type, energy, decay fraction, and decay rate. [Pg.35]

Lithium drifted detectors are produced by first doping an intrinsic crystal (Ge or Si) with p-type impurities such as B, Al, Ga or In. Lithium, a strongly n-type element, is then drifted into one end of the crystal. On refrigeration of... [Pg.462]
