Detachable balloons were on the market in the US several years ago but were recalled due to both manufacturing problems and the difficulties in accurately placing the balloons. The use of these devices has been replaced by the GDC-type coils which allow the trial placement of a coil and its exchange for another size if the first is incorrect. [Pg.28]

The use of percutaneous sclerotherapy as a treatment for varicocele was first described in 1980 [5]. There is a great variety of different coils currently available. Stainless steel coils have been used for a long time for peripheral embolizations.
