There are several plant layout considerations relevant to the Bunbury site. First, the prevailing wind direction, shown with a dark arrow in Figure 5.4. This would indicate that the tank farm is best placed on the river side of the site to avoid vapours drifting back across the plant area. The second major consideration is the need for rail access to the ammonium nitrate despatch/storage area. 

A few temporary buildings were erected at Thingley Junction including offices for a GWR despatcher and an RAOC movement controller who was responsible for all War Office and RAF stores. This office was in teleprinter contact with each sub-depot and also had a direct line to the War Office. 

The International Maritime Organisation is the only authorised group able to change or adapt the recommendations in the IMDG Code. Materials can be moved across international waters from despatch point direct to warehouse or user under the IMDG classification regardless of national legislation which comes into force for all subsequent movements. 

The number and size of the cement silos will depend on the operating and despatch conditions of the works in question In the past, silos were preferably installed at ground level, but in recent years the trend towards elevated construction has been manifest, the advantage being that it is then often possible to feed the cement direct - i.e., without intermediate handling - from the silo to the sack filling machines or to the bulk despatch loading bays. 

When goods are received they should be immediately booked into the inventory system and married to the order number. No material or product should ever be issued until it has been booked in. Failure to do so will lead to confusion and inaccuracy in the stock records, hi a lean, or just-in-time operation materials are delivered just as required direct into the production line. In a cross docking operation materials will arrive at one side of the warehouse be broken down and sorted into despatch lots for on forwarding. For details of cross docking see Chapter 14. In other operations materials will be received in bulk and stored in warehouses. No matter how received an order has to be booked in and subsequently when despatched or issued must be booked out. 

This component of current assets is crucial to the liquidity of the business. In recent years its importance has been recognised as more companies become squeezed for cash. It is not always recognised, however, that logistics variables have a direct impact on this part of the balance sheet. For example, the shorter the order cycle time, from when the customer places the order to when the goods are delivered, the sooner the invoice can be issued. Likewise the order completion rate can affect the cash flow if the invoice is not issued until after all the goods are despatched. One of the less obvious logistics variables affecting cash and receivables is invoice accuracy. A customer who receives an inaccurate invoice is unlikely to pay and the payment lead time will be extended until the problem is rectified.
