The pump design and development program were conducted by Pesco Products Division, Borg-Warner Corporation, under Contract AF 18(600)1658 and are presented in this paper through the courtesy of the Division. 

Safety and health professionals shonld be proactive in their attempts to reduce potential risks in the workplace. Althongh mnch of the average safety and health professional s day involves putting out fires or reacting to issues and situations that emerge within the workplace, it is important for safety and health professionals to maintain a proactive view and try their very best to design and develop programs that reduce or eliminate the potential risks at the workplace. 

The utilization of commercially available finite element packages in the simulation of routine operations in industrial polymer processing is well established. However, these packages cannot be usually used as general research tools. Thus flexible in-house -created programs are needed to carry out the analysis required in the investigation, design and development of novel equipment and operations. 

Environmental factors should also be incorporated into a company s technical or research and development program. Since the planning horizons for new projects may now extend to 5 to 10 years, R D programs can be designed for ecific projects. These may include new process modifications or end-of-pipe control technologies.

Over the last 60 years criteria and methods based upon resuits of catastrophic events have been used for the design of expl facilities. The criteria and methods did not include a detailed or reliable quantitative basis for assessing the degree of protection afforded by the protective facility. Recentiy, extensive research and development programs have been undertaken to establish procedures which permit a more sound and scientifically based approach to current and future design requirements (Refs 1 to 9)... 

Special correlations have been developed to handle the vapour-liquid equilibria of such systems, and these are incorporated in most design and simulation programs. 

The development of mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has provided the chemical analyst with a powerful tool for structure elucidation. The primary goal of this project is to develop the full capacity of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (TOMS) as a tool for routine structure determination. To accomplish this, we have designed and developed computer data bases for spectra and structures (1,2), programs for matching spectra (3), and procedures... 

The design and development are reviewed at regular intervals in accordance with the planned program. 

At this point for both the project schedule and the validation program the emphasis is on work activities that are contracted to the supplier(s) for system design and development and aimed at fulfilling the agreed-upon FDS. The majority of this is work is normally conducted at the supplier s (or engineering contractor s) premises. 

Design, development, and system build is normally a period of intense activity, in which a supplier will be involved in life-cycle activities and will need to provide a set of auditable design and development documentation to support the validation program. For this, the entire design and development process should be carried out to written and approved procedures, and all design, development, testing, and verification activities should be documented and approved in order to provide a level of computer system documentation that can be used to support the pharmaceutical manufacturer s life-cycle qualification activities.

Several trace explosives detection portals are currently manufactured and marketed by various companies. These trace portals are an outgrowth of funded research and development programs through the TSL and the Department of Energy (DOE) [4,5,33]. Some initial trace portal concepts have been dropped or changed in design due to lack of performance or practicality in real-world environments. The portals that have continued from research and development are able to detect extremely low levels of explosives with high accuracy.
