Once the specific causes of the disease are identified, the most important aspect of treatment of occupational skin disease is to avoid contact. Dermatological treatment of acute disease is very similar to that of disease of non-occupational background. Skin protection (gloves, barrier cream, emollients and avoidance of irritative factors) is as important as allergen avoidance. Due to the legal implications of occupational skin disease, a thorough and detailed documentation of all medical investigations is important [30-36].

A detailed description of most of the studies that form part of the preformulation stage are given elsewhere in this volume and will not be considered here. In addition, the importance of preformulation studies in the overall development of transdermal drug delivery systems has recently been excellently reviewed and discussed by Roy (1997). Also from aspects of human hygiene, especially for dermatological reasons, the number of general pathogenic bacteria should not be greater than 10" cfu/ml. Coolants should not contain any epidemic-causing pathogens.
