Quantities of potassium sulfate produced and consumed as potassium magnesium sulfate [13826-56-7] K2S0-2MgS04, are omitted in the U.S. Department of the Interior reports as classified information. Consumption data for potassium compounds identified as other potassium salts imply that the amount of potassium magnesium sulfate consumed in the United States is about double that of K SO. This gap is expected to widen as soils become more depleted of natural magnesium- and sulfur-containing minerals. [Pg.530]

Seawater Evaporators The production of potable water from saline waters represents a large and growing field of application for evaporators. Extensive work done in this field to 1972 was summarized in the annual Saline Water Conversion Repoi ts of the Office of Sahne Water, U.S. Department of the Interior. Steam economies on the order of 10 kg evaporation/kg steam are usually justified because (1) unit production capacities are high, (2) fixed charges are low on capital used for pubhc works (i.e., they use long amortization periods and have low interest rates, with no other return on investment considered), (3) heat-transfer performance is comparable with that of pure water, and (4) properly treated seawater causes httle deterioration due to scahng or fouhng. [Pg.1144]

In 1965 the Water Quahty Act established a new trend in water pollution control. It provided that the states set water quality standards in accordance with federal guidelines. If the states f ed to do so, the standards would be set by the federal government subject to a review hearing. In 1966, the Clean Water Restoration Act transferred the Feder Water Pollution Control Administration from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to the Department of the Interior. It also gave the Interior Department the responsibility for the Oil Pollution Act. [Pg.2160]
