Delta Project

Large underwater slides occurred where the HoHsh and deltas project into Kenal Lake. The slides were Hendron reported to have moved from 600 to 4100 ft (1975) carying from 4 to 200 thousand yd of material The four largest slides (Lakeview, Lawing, Ship McCulloch Creek, and Rocky Creek) were described. The primary focus of this chapter is two major 20th century projects, the Zuiderzee reclamation and the Delta Project. These are arguably two of the largest land reclamation and flood protection projects every completed. This chapter also describes some of the plans that are in place to manage future climate change and sea level rise. Additional discussion on flood protection and land reclamation in the Netherlands can be found in Designed for Dry Feet Flood Protection and Land Reclamation in the Netherlands (Hoeksema, 2006) and Man-Made Lowlands History of Water Management and Land Reclamation in the Netherlands (van de Ven, 2004). 

The Zuiderzee reclamation was easily the largest effort by the Dutch to reclaim lost land. The Delta Project was the largest coastal flood protection project ever attempted by the Dutch. These two projects are similar in many ways. Both were initially planned without any urgency until a flood event sent the plans into action. Both projects were developed in stages allowing new developments to alter the plans as time went by. And, both projects took longer to complete than originally planned. 

At 9 km (5.6 mi) wide the Oosterschelde was the largest estuary to be closed in the Delta Project. The opening passed a tidal volume of 1.1(10) m (39(10) ft ) and included gullies up to 35 m (115 ft) deep. The original plan called for a closure similar to the Brouwers Dam. The first step, commencing in 1967, was to construct three islands in the middle of the estuary creating four gaps to be closed. 

Process Description, The MCRC (Maximum Claus Recovery Concept) process, which was described by Heigold and Berkeley (1983) and Heigold (1991), is licensed by Delta Projects Inc., of Calgary, Canada, and is quite similar to the Amoco CBA process. Plastics provide different performance requirement in providing protective liners in many different applications such as building foundations, pipe and tank liners containing corrosive liquids, etc. As an example Fig. 4-13 shows an RP stack liner being inspected prior to installation in a 682 ft. high reinforced concrete chimney (background) of the 1,500-megawatt Intermountain Power Project near Delta, Utah (1985).

Averaging is a different kind of operation since it associates with a stochastic variable a non-stochastic or sure number. Alternatively it may be viewed as a projection in the following way. The set of all stochastic variables contains a subset of variables whose probability density is a delta peak. This subset is isomorphic with the sure numbers of the range and may therefore be identified with them. The operation of taking the average is then a projection of the total space of stochastic variables onto this subset. 

Performing the summation of the products of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients over all projection parameters, we obtain the invariants, called 3n/-coefficients. Their trivial cases were presented in Figs 8.6b-e (Kro-necker and triangular deltas). The first non-trivial case is represented by formula (6.16) or the transformation matrix of three angular momenta, connected with 6/-coefficient (see formula (6.42) and Fig. 8.7)). 

Of the 19 LAII projects 3 are part of the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX), which looks at the response of plant communities to climate change. Three others are concerned with atmosphere processes, including weather patterns affecting snowmelt, Arctic-wide temperature trends, and water vapor over the Arctic and its relationship with atmospheric circulation and surface conditions. Another project deals with the response of birds to climate and sea level change at river deltas, and yet another studies the balance and recent volume changes of McCall Glacier in the Brooks Range. 

Rothman and Westfall [3,4], divided the delta receptor population into two components one coupled to mu opioid receptors, and the other acting alone. The third hypothesis combined these ideas, by suggesting that the delta receptors that interact with the mu opioid receptors are different molecular entities from those that act alone [5,6]. A definitive test of the above hypotheses would be to identify two or more delta receptor proteins by molecular cloning. The cloning of the human delta opioid receptor [7] was the fortunate outcome of a larger project in our laboratory to clone of the cDNAs encoding putative delta opioid receptor subtypes.
