The Judges of Military Tribunal No. 6 hearing the evidence in the I. G. Farben trial. From left to right Judge James Morris, Judge Curtis G. Shake, Judge Paul M. Hebert, and Alternate Judge Clarence F. Merrell. [Pg.83]

If Paul Hebert and Clarence Merrell had sat as a majority on the Farben court, I am convinced their opinion would have soon become a landmark in international law, which might not be without some influence on the Soviet government today. But why had Judges Shake and Morris reacted as they did I concluded that the reason must have been fear — their own great fear of the trend of events in 1948. [Pg.360]

To fully realize a wormhole, Morris and Thorne calculated various properties of matter required to form the wormhole s throat. One property of interest to them was the tension (i.e., the breaking strength) of matter needed to keep the wormhole open. What they found was that the required tension would be very large. As Paul Halpern in his book Cosmic Wormholes notes, for a throat that is four miles across, the quantity of force needed is 10 pounds per square inch. This would be more than the pressure of a trillion boxes, weighing a trillion tons each, placed in the palm of your hand. Larger wormholes with wider throats would have more reasonable values for throat tension. [Pg.75]

In 1938-1939, advances in the forensic detection of arsenic allowed officials to uncover an extensive murder ring in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (Young, 2000). Four individuals were convicted of being involved in the arsenic poisoning of approximately 50-100 people for insurance money. Two of the convicts, Morris Bolber and Carina Favato, cooperated with authorities and received life in prison. The other two, cousins Paul and Herman Petrillo, were executed in 1940 and 1941, respectively (Young, 2000). [Pg.288]

Valentine, Robyn Kelly, Chris Kincaid, Selwyn Sacks, Ivan Savov, Paul Tomascak, and Doug Wiens. The research efforts of USF undergraduate students Patrick Mattie, Suzie Norrell, and Steve Guggino provided key data for aspects of what has been presented here. This work was supported in part by grants to Morris from NSF-OCE and from JOI-USSAC, and by grants to Ryan from NSF (EAR, OCE, and REU) and JOI-USSAC. Review and editorial handling by Rick Carlson improved the quality of the manuscript. [Pg.1166]

Specific interest in the periodic table and the elements has produced a number of recent books. One of the first serious examinations of the history of the elements was done by May Elvira Weeks. Discovery of the Elements (1968), an updated version with material from Henry M. Leicester, can still be found in libraries. Richard Morris s The Last Sorcerers The Path from Alchemy to the Periodic Table (2003) is an excellent book, while Paul Strathern s Mendeleyev s Dream (2000) is a nontechnical look at the hunt for order among the elements that reads almost like a novel. More technical material on matter theory can be found in Antio Clericuzio, Elements, Principles, and Corpuscles A Study of Atomism and Chemistry in the Seventeenth Century (2000) David M. Knight, Atoms and Elements. A Study of Theories of Matter in England in the Nineteenth Century (1967) and Mary Jo Nye, From Chemical Philosophy to Theoretical Chemistry Dynamics of Matter and Dynamics of Disciplines 1800-1950 (1993). [Pg.168]
