Goods, drying

In many porotts drying goods there are nitmerous narrow pores and capillaries, which contain liqttid. This liquid is transported to the material s surface by capillary action. For wide pores with more than about 1 pm in diameter, the vapor pressure at the liquid s surface is the equilibriitm vapor pressure, whieh only depends on the temperature. If a drying good has pores so fine that a vapor pressure drop of 1 occurs, it behaves as hygroscopic. [Pg.567]

Colloidal materials tend to swell upon moisture uptake. [Pg.568]

The equations of Freundlich, Langmuir as well as Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller, which were presented in Chap. 2, are suitable for the mathematical description of sorption isotherms. [Pg.568]

The heat of phase change, q, also often called the sorption enthalpy, can be divided into the enthalpy of vaporization A/ lg and the bond enthalpy A/ g, as it was already presented in Chap. 2. [Pg.568]

Similar to adsorption a hysteresis of the equilibrium curve may also occur in drying. In drying processes, the desorptive equilibrium is relevant. [Pg.568]

Modified atmospheres that predominantly contain nitrogen are increasingly used in the packaging of fresh pasta, nuts (qv), potato chips, dry goods (such as coffee), breads, and prepared salads to extend shelf-life. [Pg.80]

Of other metals, gold and silver are only used for special apparatus in isolated cases platinum, for concentrating sulphuric acid zinc for vessels for storing, and for scoops and similar vessels used in handling dry goods and tin, almost exclusively in the form of tubes. Nickel and aluminium are also now largely used in the construction of apparatus for chemical works, and will no doubt be used more frequently in the future as the prices for these goods become further reduced. [Pg.118]

But for the past few days he had spoken to them about only one thing the girl, the daughter of a merchant who lived in the village they would reach in about four days. He had been to the village only once, the year before. The merchant was the proprietor of a dry goods shop, and he always demanded that the sheep be sheared in his presence, so that he would not be cheated. A friend had told the boy about the shop, and he had taken his sheep there. [Pg.2]

The name rayon was officially adopted in 1924 by the National Retail Dry Goods Association. Prior to this, the fiber was called artificial silk, wood-silk, or viscose silk. On October 26, 1937, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) officially defined rayon as a textile fiber or yarn produced chemically from cellulose or with a cellulose base. This definition covered cuprammonium and viscose rayon as well as acetate fiber. To avoid confusion in the trade, FTC rules were adopted on December 11, 1951, which defined rayon as man-made textile fibers and filaments composed of regenerated cellulose. A separate definition was adopted for acetate, man-made textile fibers and filaments composed of cellulose acetate. ... [Pg.715]
