While operating 7000 hr one will be able to process 7000/0.72, or 9722 batches/year. Each batch will then contain 2 x 106/0.97(9722), or 212 lb. The necessary reactor volume will then be 28 gal. Under these circumstances the times necessary to perform the nonreactive operations would undoubtedly be somewhat reduced. One should recognize that these steps will be the bottlenecks in this operation. The required reactor size is definitely on the small side, and it would be preferable to operate in a larger reactor and process a smaller number of batches per year with attendant reductions in labor requirements. [Pg.357]

This last consideration induced me to send in my application, but with two definite conditions. First of all I stated tell the Gauleiter that I will never swear to the Party program "The attitude of the Party toward the Jews, the invasion of religious questions and the suppression of the free press in Germany alone are points which I will not endorse. Second, I have no intention of attending meetings of the local party and listening to lectures by people far below me with respect to their education." I know that the latter condition was... [Pg.153]

It was a hue shock to Astrid and myself when we learned last Sunday night that Hitoshi has passed away. This is a tremendous loss for our whole community. As yon correctly state, we had seen him in Tokyo twice, namely at October 12 and 13, when he attended both of my lectures. He was in good mood and spirit and we had in fact intense scientific discnssions about the chelate effect and this continued until November 3, when he sent me his last mail. We all definitely lost a veiy dear friend. Of conrse, Astrid and I have immediately written to his wife Ei... and as you say, at this time we can only pray for his sonl. [Pg.449]

The physical processes by which natural gas liquids are recovered include phase separation, cooling, compression, absorption, adsorption, refrigeration, and any combination of these. Obviously the definition already stated excludes refinery light volatiles produced by the destructive decomposition of heavy petroleum fractions and it also excludes liquids that may be produced synthetically from natural gas. These distinctions are of economic importance in considering our basic energy reserves. Both the refinery volatiles and the synthetic liquids represent conversion products from other hydrocarbons and the conversion is usually attended by a considerable loss. Thus it has been stated that only about 47% (17) of the energy of natural gas is realized in the liquid hydrocarbon products of the Fischer-Tropsch type of synthesis. [Pg.256]

While several preparative routes may exist for the synthesis of a given heterocyclic polymer, we have attempted to portray the method that has received the most common usage. Throughout our discussion we have attempted to reference and supplement the most recent and definitive texts, monographs and reviews that exist on a given subject. In addition, whenever possible we have indicated what particular properties and attending applications are accrued by inclusion of the heterocycle in the polymer framework. [Pg.270]

An example of the different points of view and different tastes in the matter of acid-base definitions was provided to one of the authors in graduate school while attending lectures on acid-base chemistry from two professors. One Felt that the solvent system was very useful, but that the Lewis concept went too far because it included coordination chemistry. The second used Lewis concepts in all of his work, but felt uncomfortable with the Usanovich definition because it included redox chemistry To the latter s credit, however, he realized that the separation was an artificial one, and he suggested the pyridine oxide example given above. [Pg.175]

Once the differences between both types of potential perturbation are clarified, a question arises about the nature of potential-controlled techniques attending to the nature of the perturbation, are they pulse potential or step potential techniques If the pulse definition is applied in a strict sense, only Single Pulse Voltammetry is a true pulse technique (see Scheme 2.1), whereas the rest of double and multipotential techniques are indeed multistep techniques (see Sects. 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1). [Pg.63]

Adsorbed films between two immiscible liquids. The question of the meaning of the term pn in the surface layer has been raised by Crax-ford, Gatty, and Teorell,2 without, however, coming to any very clear decision. Danielli s estimate was a very rough one, based on the application of the Donnan equilibrium between the surface layer and the interior, and suffers from the difficulties always attending an attempt to consider concentrations in the surface layer in a similar way to concentrations in a bulk phase the surface layer is not homogeneous. pH is closely related to, and is determined by, the electrochemical potential (see Chap. VIII, pp. 304 ff.), and this depends on the electrostatic potential, which varies rapidly at different levels near to the surface it appears possible that the only satisfactory definition of pa in the surface may be one which varies rapidly at different depths. The question appears one which would repay... [Pg.411]

Flame has already been defined as a mass of gas raised to incandescence. It will be observed that this definition does not limit flame to such phenomena as are attendant upon combustion it simply postulates the existence of vapour or gas. Whilst flames may and often do exist under conditions excluding all types of combustion, as for example during the electric discharges through rarefied gases, in the majority of cases flames are the result of rapid oxidation. [Pg.75]

There yet remains the question to what extent Boerhaave was influenced by Spinoza s writings. We know that he liked Spinoza s opinion on freedom of the mind, but it was also widely known that Boerhaave refuted Spinozism. Moreover, in 1690 Boerhaave got his doctoral degree in philosophy after defending his Disputatio inauguralis, in which he publicly criticised the philosophy of Spinoza. Moreover, Lamettrie, who attended Boerhaave s lectures, stated that his teacher was a materialist and that personne ne fut moins Spino-siste. Boerhaave cannot possibly have agreed with Spinoza since Spinoza s definition of God and His creation differed considerably from the views preached in the Calvinist church. The general opinion in those circles was that Spinoza, the bearer of the myth of atheism, had to be expelled. It is in this area that the opinions of Boerhaave and Spinoza differed considerably. [Pg.43]

It is written in his nearly impossible style he invented his own language for many of the standard items in the subject, such as detors , which are determinants of orthonormal orbitals . He introduces Definitions and gives Theorems, an approach which was not attractive to the students who attended his Mathematics Part III course The Quantum Theory of Molecules in Cambridge. [Pg.57]
