Definition of concepts

Definition of Concepts. The hydrostatic pressure in a borehole is the pressure exerted by a column of fluid that height is the true vertical depth. This is... [Pg.1036]

The definition of "concepts" must be accompanied by explicit recipes for computing them is actual cases. There is no more space in theoretical chemistty for "driving forces", "effects, etc. not accompanied by specific rules for their quantification. The impact of a new "concept will be greater if the rules of quantifications are not restricted to ad hoc methods, but related to methods of general use in molecular quantum mechanics. A concept based exclusively on some specific features of a given method, e g. the extended Hiickel method, is less robust than a concurrent concept which may be quantified also using other levels of the theory. [Pg.9]

Before scientifically sound research can be performed on a subject, clear definitions must be set. Although, this may seem a logical step, Osborn (Osborn et al., 1988) highlighted that this has been a stumbling block for research in safety science since its inception. Definitions of concepts like accidents, incidents, near misses, risk, and safety, are known in the field of safety science, but interpreted differently in various situations. Unclear and ambiguous definitions lead to misinterpretations and confusion and must be avoided. Therefore, some general concepts used in safety science and the definitions used in this thesis are discussed in this Section. In the remainder of this thesis specific concepts will be defined where appropriate and can also be found in a list of acronyms and definitions presented in the beginning of this thesis. [Pg.18]

We end this section with a comparison of the basic concepts of laser control and traditional temperature control. This discussion includes an elementary explanation and definition of concepts such as incoherent superpositions of stationary states versus coherent superpositions of stationary states and quantum interference. [Pg.204]

Note also that the form of the pulse does not appear in the expression [Eq. (2.78)] for the cross section. This is because resolving the energy, embodied in the orthogonality expression [Eq. (2.47)], extracts a single frequency component of e(to), whose contribution is canceled in the division by the incident light intensity. Therefore, as shown in Appendix 2A, we can use any convenient pulse shape to compute energy-resolved quantities. This is not the case if we want to follow the real-time dynamics of the system, where the pulse shape is intimately linked with the observables. Indeed this link prevents a pulse-free definition of concepts such as the lifetime of a state. This issue is addressed in Appendix 2A. [Pg.29]

The question of who is the inventor alone and who are the inventors together is many times troublesome. Let us consider what courts have said about an applicant reasonably asserting that he is the sole inventor. First of all, courts have regularly said that a sole applicant must have a complete conception of the invention. A frequently quoted definition of conception of invention was stated in 1897 in a decision by the Patent Office Commissioner (14) ... [Pg.23]

The formulation of an engineering discipline such as heat transfer is based on definitions of concepts and statements of natural laws in terms of these concepts. The natural laws of heat transfer, like those of other disciplines, can be neither proved nor disproved but are arrived at inductively, on the basis of evidence collected from a wide variety of experiments. As we continue to increase our understanding of the universe, the present statements of natural laws will be refined and generalized. For the time being, however, we shall refer to these statements as the available approximate descriptions of nature and employ them for the solution of current problems of engineering. [Pg.3]

At first, stakeholders verbally expressed and individually described the most relevant aspects. This phase was necessary to share the information in the group. Once they reached a sufficient consensus of perception and expectations among them, they were asked to code the concepts expressed into a concise form, to achieve a compromise between the precision required by the logical definition of concepts, while keeping the necessary vagueness of natural human language. [Pg.155]

Like fertilization, or zygosis, or any other proposed definition of conception, the onset of twin embryogenesis, the conception of twins if you will, is not an event that can be considered to occur in an instant, but is instead a complex system process that occupies space and time. It has no instantaneous beginning or end, but constitutes a developanental horizon, perhaps crisp and clear from a distance, but not subject to clear definition from anywhere within conceptual or temporal proximity. [Pg.21]

Work with risk is expressed by model shown in Figure 3 (Prochazkova 2013). It starts with definition of concept of work with risk (system characteristics, determination of assets, specification of aims), on the basis of which risks are identified, analysed, assessed, judged, managed, traded-off and monitored. Feedbacks denoted in this Figure 4 are used if risk level is not on required level (Prochazkova 2013). [Pg.1466]

Consider alternative concepts or alternative definitions of concepts. [Pg.12]
