The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), currently the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) of the National Science Foundation, has undertaken the most systematic evaluation of ocean hydrate deposits. The DSDP has recovered hydrate cores in the deep oceans from both coasts of the United States, from the Mid-America Trench off Guatemala, and off the coast of Peru. Atotal of 23 oceanic hydrate cores have been recovered, including the Gulf of Mexico and three Soviet... [Pg.24]

Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry data of the "aromatic hydrocarbon" fractions of nearly 100 Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sediment samples have been re-examined for the occurrence of organic sulfur compounds (OSC). Approximately 70% of the samples contain OSC with varying distribution patterns, although isoprenoid thiophenes are invariably present. [Pg.613]

Samples were made available by the support of the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the Ocean Drilling Program. This overview work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), grant No. We 346/27, while the original data collection have been financially supported by the DFG with grant Nos. We 346/21, We 346/23, We 346/24 and We 346/25. [Pg.631]

This study is based upon abundant materials obtained by many scientists in reference cross-sections on the coasts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov as well as on numerous data referring to the shelves of these basins. The information about the Quaternary deposits of the Black Sea basins is poor and was obtained owing to the deep-sea drilling within the frameworks of the program of cruise 42 of D/V Glomar Challenger [1-3]. [Pg.32]

Although many of the in situ Cretaceous oceanic plateaus have been drilled by the Deep Sea Drilling (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Programs (ODP), the insight that these drill holes can provide is relatively limited compared to the... [Pg.1798]

Recently, the first fossil fungi have been found in the submarine, deep basaltic earth crust (Schumann et al., 2004). The fossils were detected in thin sections obtained from drilled basaltic cores collected during Ocean Drilling Program, Leg 200, in the North Pacific Ocean (Stephen et al., 2003). Unique filamentous fossilized fungi were observed in the carbonate-filled vesicles of a massive tholeiitic lava flow from the upper oceanic crust at a depth of 51 m below sea floor, beneath sediment and magmatic rocks, and under an overlying water column of about 5000 m (Fig. 16.1). These... [Pg.387]

Fig. 8.2 Pore water chemistry of a deep sea sediment from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 1225). The core was obtained during Leg 201 of the Ocean Drilling Program and spans the entire sediment deposit, from the sediment surface at 3760 m water depth down to the 11 million years old basaltic crust (hatched) at 320 mbsf (meter below sea floor). Data from D Hondt et al. (2003). Fig. 8.2 Pore water chemistry of a deep sea sediment from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 1225).
