Decoration colors

Dekorations-farbe, /. decorative color, -lack, m. decorative varnish, dekorieren, v.t. decorate, dekrepitieren, v.i. decrepitate. 

ANODIC OXIDATION. Oxidation is defined not only as reaction with oxygen, but as any chemical reaction attended by removal of electrons. Therefore, when current is applied to a pair of electrodes so as to make them anode and cathode, the former can act as a continuous remover of electrons and hence bring about oxidation (while the latter will favor reduction since it supplies electrons). This anodic oxidation is utilized in industry for various purposes, One of tire earliest to be discovered (H, Kolbe. 1849) was the production of hydrocarbons from aliphatic acids, or more commonly, from their alkali salts. Many other substances may be produced, on a laboratory scale or even, in some cases, on an economically sound production scale, by anodic oxidation. The process is also widely used to impart corrosion-resistant or decorative (colored) films to metal surfaces. For example, in the anodization or Eloxal process, the protection afforded by the oxide film ordinarily present on the surface of aluminum articles is considerably increased by building up this film by anodic oxidation.

Different appearance (shape) and more sales appeal (decorations, colors). Typical examples include kitchenware, containers, cutlery (some previously made from plastics or other materials such as glass, wood, metal, paper, etc.),... 

Barium sulfate is used to produce pigments in paints, though the density of color is insufficient for its use alone and it is frequently combined with zinc salts. Barium is also used in die decorative coloring of glass during manufacture. The green color of its flame is exploited in the manufacture of pyrotechnic devices. 

While in the last thirty years only black cooktop panels (Fig. 3.3 left) have been marketed, recently white and cream cooktop panels have been introduced. This development responds to the request for more differentiation. As a result, Schott has started a campaign to introduce a number of new cooktop panels which are colored in the bulk. White and cream-colored cooktop panels are based on keatite s.s. crystal containing glass ceramics (see the Ceran Arcticfire cooktop panel in Fig. 3.3 right). The variety of colors available to date can be embellished with a broad selection of decoration colors (see Fig. 3.4).

The Industrial Revolution would introduce into the field of ceramics radical and ceaseless changes during the entire 20 centuiy, in the modes of preparation, manufacture, decorations, coloring and firing and especially with the use of the electric power, advances in chemistiy and material sciences. New applications that take advantage of the resistance of the material to thermal shocks (insulators, heat shields, etc.) as well as the inalterability and harmlessness of bioceramics would be implemented. 

For aluminum alloys, anodic treatment is widely applied to protect their surfaces by increasing their corrosion resistance. The anodic treatment also often produces a decorative colored surface as well.
