The patent Hterature indicates that the AUiedSignal process uses lower boiling solvents such as chlorofluorocarbons as the cooling/extraction baths (16), whereas the processes of Stamicarbon indicate the use of decalin solvent followed by cooling and slow removal of the decalin in successively hotter chambers while stretching (17).

More publications were found related to carbides. First, Suslick s early report [64] that certain carbonyls sonicated in a decalin solvent under argon. For Fe and Co, nanostructured metals are formed for Mo and W, metal carbides (e.g., M02C) are produced. Molybdenum carbide was used later as a catalyst. The selectivity and catalytic activity of the Mo and W carbides was examined in the dehydrogenation of alkanes [140]. Another carbide that has already been mentioned is that of Pd [65], which was prepared by Maeda s group. Iron carbide was a byproduct that served as protective layer in Nikitenko s work on air-stable iron nanoparticles [70].

A thin film was made by scraping off the outer surface of the polymer insert and dissolving it in decalin solvent to create a thin (30 Dm thick) film. The IR spectrum recorded on the thin film showed the polymer to be a polypropylene copolymer with ethylene, but it also showed an anomalous peak at 1735.7 em (Fig. 10.29). Sonochemical Synthesis of M50 Type Steel Nanopowders. A dispersion of 15g (0.0765 mol) of Fe(CO)5, 0.66g of Cr(EtxC6H6-x)2, 0.75g (0.0015 mol) of CpMo(CO)3 and 1.0 g of polyoxyethylene sorbitan trioleate (surfactant) in dry decalin was sonicated at 50% amplitude for 7h at room temperature in a sonochemical reactor fitted with a condenser and gas inlet and outlet tubes connected to a mercury bubbler. The color of the solution turned dark and then black within a few minutes and this reaction mixture was sonicated until the formation of shiny metallic particles was observed on the walls of the reaction vessel. The sonication was then stopped and the decalin solvent was removed from the reaction flask via vacuum distillation. Fine black powder (Yield 4.448g) remained at the bottom of the reactor, which was then isolated, transferred to a vial and coated with mineral oil before the compaction.
