Kerosene is a good solvent for use with ICP-AES but is prone to noisy plasma. The solvent tetralin (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene) has been used by workers involved in metal analysis of crude and lubricating oils with success. The solvent decalin (decahydronaphthalene) was also found to be a good solvent for metal analysis of crude oils but it is very expensive and not used extensively. The analytical performance of these solvents was studied for stability over an extended period of time to determine the effect of varying viscosities. The solvents toluene and xylene are also good solvents for dissolution but have high background to noise ratio and will not be discussed further.

Decalin (decahydronaphthalene), benzene, 1,4-dioxane, and ethanol may be used as solvents for the photolysis. In an alternative procedure, volatile materials swept from the photolysis vessel are condensed in a dry ice trap. This cold mixture is added to a flask containing a magnetically stirred solution of dimsyl anion in dimethyl sulfoxide, and fractionation at reduced pressure provides a solution of bicyclopentene in tetrahydrofuran.

Flipping between conformations is prevented altogether in fused ring systems. The simplest example of such a system is decalin (decahydronaphthalene), which can exist as cis and trans isomers (Figure 10.18). These two isomers were first isolated by W. Hiickel in 1925. The /rafw-decalin type of ring fusion occurs in many steroid molecules. The substituents are locked in either equatorial or axial positions, and this facilitated the elucidation of the relationship between reactivity and conformational position.
