Estimating the Hedonic Wage Locus. Economists use the hedonic locus summarized in (1.2) to study employment patterns of how the labor market implicitly compensates workers for workplace injury risks. The slope of the hedonic locus, W (nj), is the marginal wage premium firms must pay workers to accept (more) injury risk and has been used to compute the implicit value workers place on their lives via risking death at work (Viscusi 1992, 1993). [Pg.16]

There are episodes in which disgruntled workers or terrorists commit sabotage that leads to emergencies. A growing cause of injury and death at work involves workplace violence. Typically, employees or former employees attack or kill other employees or supervisors. Some of the cases involve depression and other mental illnesses unknown to employers. See Case 29-4. [Pg.413]

The regulations are concerned with the reporting to the enforcing authorities deaths at work, certain types of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrence incidents known to have a serious injury potential. The common law position on health and safety at work is that employers must take reasonable care to protect their employees from risk of foreseeable injury, disease or death at work. The council, a not-for-profit organization, promotes safety throughout the United States. The National Safety Council (NSC) recently announced its new SMS. A case in point would be a study in which the doses were such that an increase in minor anomalies or skeletal variants was found at the lower doses and a high incidence of in utero death at the top dose (Doses A, B, and C in Fig. 1).
