The use of the Hammett equation has also been extended to several new types of applications. Since these are not germane to the subject matter of the present chapter, we wiU simply mention work on applications to ethylenic and acetylenic compounds the various applications to physical properties, such as infrared frequencies and intensities, ultraviolet spectra, polarographic half-wave potentials, dipole moments,NMR and NQR spectra,and solubility data and applications to preparative data and biological activity. 

Each screening center has medicinal and synthetic chemistry expertise in order to optimize hits identified from HTS campaigns and develop them into chemical probes. Specific capabilities vary, however typical strategies employed include parallel synthesis, computational and informatics analysis, and analytical capabilities such as LC/MS techniques. The structures of novel compounds that are prepared, their synthetic protocols, analytical data and biological data are all available, and samples of final probes developed are deposited into the MLSMR. A Working Group comprised of chemists from each center meets regularly to share information, best practices, and insure optimal use of resources.

Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children Study includes 14,000 pregnant women and their children and includes collection of environmental, dietary, personal, and socioeconomic data and clinical data and biologic samples (European Commission 2004). 

LTF uses laboratory sublethal toxicity data and biological field observations ranked on the same scale to examine the strength of their relationship. The LTF rating scheme can use all endpoints determined for biota (fish and invertebrates) in field observations, and allows for the addition of further endpoints and indices as they are developed. LTF has the potential of linking a specific effluent source to a measured field effect in indigenous organisms. 

Cancer risk assessment involves two steps. The first step is a qualitative evaluation of all epidemiology studies, animal bioassay data, and biological activity (e.g., mutagenicity). The substance is classified as to the carcinogenic risk to humans based on the weight of evidence. If the evidence is sufficient, the substance may be classified as a definite, probable, or possible human carcinogen. 

The first is a rule-based system, which makes predictions for untested agents by drawing upon the human interpretation of toxicity data and biological information. That is, it captures, organizes, and applies scientific expertise that relates chemical structures with developmental toxicity. Examples of commercially available rule-based approaches include HazardExpert,23 Deductive Estimation of Risk from Existing Knowledge (DEREK),24... 

Possible mechanisms, supporting NMR, IR and mass spectra data and biological activity are discussed.
