Such transformations have been extensively studied in quenched steels, but they can also be found in nonferrous alloys, ceramics, minerals, and polymers. They have been studied mainly for technical reasons, since the transformed material often has useful mechanical properties (hard, stiff, high damping (internal friction), shape memory). Martensitic transformations can occur at rather low temperature ( 100 K) where diffusional jumps of atoms are definitely frozen, but also at much higher temperature. Since they occur without transport of matter, they are not of central interest to solid state kinetics. However, in view of the crystallographic as well as the elastic and even plastic implications, diffusionless transformations may inform us about the principles involved in the structural part of heterogeneous solid state reactions, and for this reason we will discuss them. [Pg.296]

The commonly-used dynamic mechanical instruments measure the deformation of a material in response to vibrational forces. The dynamic modulus, the loss modulus, and a mechanical damping or internal friction are determined from these measurements. The modulus indicates stiffness of material, and it may be a shear, a tensile, or a flexile modulus, depending upon the experimental equipment. The mechanical damping (internal friction) gives the amount of energy dissipated as heat during the deformation. The transmissibihty of an isolator varies with frequency and is a function of the natural frequency (J/) of the isolator and its internal damping. Figure 7 shows the transmissibihty for a family of simple isolators whose fundamental frequency can be represented as follows, where k is the stiffness of the isolator, N/m and m is the supported mass, kg. Figure 7 shows that an isolator acts as an amplifier at its natural frequency, with the output force being greater than the input force. Bellows can vibrate, both from internal fluid flow and externally imposed mechanical vibrations. Internal flow liner sleeves prevent flow-induced resonance, which produces bellows fatigue failure in minutes at high flow velocities. Mechanically induced resonant vibration is avoided by a bellows with a natural frequency far away from the forcing frequency, if known. Multiple-ply bellows are less susceptible to vibration failure because of the damping effect of interply friction. [Pg.66]

Modtilus Measurements Another SCC test technique is the use of changes of modulus as a measure of the damping capacity of a metal. It is known that a sample of a given test material containing cracks will have a lower effec tive modulus than does a sample of identical material free of cracks. The technique provides a rapid and reliable evaluation of the susceptibility of a sample material to SCC in a specific environment. The so-called internal friction test concept can also be used to detect and probe nucleation and progress of cracking and the mechanisms controlling it. [Pg.2436]

Filters have a time constant r = R x C which increases the damping of the measuring instrument. The time constant depends on the required attenuation and the interfering frequency, but not on the internal resistance of the measuring instrument. Tubular Anodes Tubular anodes are supplied in diameters between 12-5 and 32 mm and have been designed for installations where water conditions on the plant under protection are known to be turbulent.
