Damage prevention

The NG route is used most commonly for short-term (less than 1 month) enteral access. Some institutions prefer the OG route because of less damage to the sinuses the OG route is also useful in situations such as facial trauma, where nasopharyngeal damage prevents NG feeding. The major advantage of these routes is that the tubes can be placed quickly and inexpensively by the nurse at the bedside. [Pg.1514]

ASSET PROTECTION. Shields intended for intentional detonation are to be designed to prevent damage to buildings, equipment, and other assets in the area. Damage prevention is considered adequate if normal operations are in no way interrupted or hindered as a result of any change to the operational environment from explosions in this type of shield, and the shield may be expected to remain operational throughout its designed life cycle. [Pg.295]

The efficient resolution of chemical harms clearly requires infor-mafion about exposure levels and their health consequences, but the assignment of costs for acquiring this information is less a matter of efficiency than proponents of sfricf liability maintain. Even if one believes it would not be efficient for individuals to be responsible for the risks involved in the thousands of choices they make and that firms are the least-cost providers of knowledge about damage prevention, the issue of whefher people should pay firms or other agents to think about risk is a value choice about property rights ownership. [Pg.40]

If the court selects the optimal level of due care, then due care will include all activities whose costs are less than the damages prevented. [Pg.81]

Flaxseed was among the best food sources in the prevention of in vivo spontaneous chromosomal damage in mice (Trentin et al., 2004). The exact reason for the chromosomal damage prevention was not identified however, the mechanism may be related to the antioxidant function of flaxseed components. Lignans have antioxidant activity and thus may contribute to the anticancer activity of flaxseed (Kangas et al., 2002 Kitts et al., 1999 Prasad 1997a, Yuan et al., 1999). [Pg.37]

The low degree of hard-segment crystallinity in the solvent-cast samples with the added problem of loss of crystallinity from electron-beam damage prevented visualization of either the hard- or soft-segment domains by dark-field microscopy. Therefore bright-field defocus electron microscopy was used to enhance contrast between the microphases (27, 28). Only for the 1/5/4 and 1/6/5 samples was a distinct domain... [Pg.55]

Historical experience with pipeline failures reveals that the two single most common causes for failures are outside forces and corrosion. There are variations in individual systems. Accordingly, a significant part of the effort in achieving better pipeline safety is corrosion control and damage prevention directed at outside forces. The other causes of pipeline failure, individually, contribute to a much smaller proportion of pipeline incidents, but they are still addressed because their aggregate contribution matters. [Pg.2182]

Photodynamic Damage Prevention by Extracts and Some Hydroxycoumarins from Fraxinus ornus Bark... [Pg.338]

The work presented in the preceding pages described the antimicrobial, antioxidative, antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, skin regenerating, photodynamic damage prevention and antiviral properties of Fraxinus ornus bark extract and its constituents. [Pg.344]

The total ethanolic extract of the stem bark and its main constituent esculin (1) were found practically non-toxic. They inhibited the classical pathway and alternative pathway of complement activation. The total extract and 1 displayed antiinflammatory activity in both zymosan- and carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice. The extract exhibited a pronounced antioxidative activity and caused intense wound epithelization. The antimicrobial and photodynamic damage prevention properties of the extract and its fractions were dependable on their... [Pg.344]

V Damage Prevention The ethanol content of E85 is high enough to damage some of the material used in the construction of conventional vehicles. Therefore, the FFV fuel tank is made of stainless steel. The fuel lines are also made of stainless steel or lined with nonreactive materials. [Pg.549]

Another interesting technique for artifically generating scale lifting and splits has been described by Kon et al. [149]. This technique involves extraction of proteins from the fiber via enzyme digestion followed by freeze drying. This method has been used to study damage prevention by polymers. [Pg.282]
