Portland cement is an aluminosilicate powder which sets to a solid mass on treatment with water. It is usually manufactured by grinding limestone and clay to a fine powder, mixing with water to form a slurry, and burning the mixture, with a flame of gas, oil, or coal dust, in a long rotary kiln. At the hot end of the kiln, where the temperature is about 1500 C, the aluminosilicate mixture is sintered together into small round marbles, called clinker. The clinker is ground to a fine powder in a ball mill (a rotating cylindrical mill filled with steel balls), to produce the final product. Over 100,000,000 barrels of cement per year is made in the United States. [Pg.631]

These mills employ attrition and impact to grind the product by tumbling in cylindrical mills partly filled with grinding media. The media can be round metal balls or nonmetallic pebbles that are 1/2 in. or larger in size. Ball mills for grinding hard materials are usually lined with heavy-duty steel alloy liners. Some ball mills employ internal baffles to prevent slippage of the grinding media over the internal shell surface. [Pg.2738]

This test is performed using circular steel plates which are 20 mm thick and with a diameter three times as large as the characteristic dimension of the concrete aggregate of the substrate and, in any case, not less than 40 mm. One production line of a paper mill consists according the size and the quality of the produced paper sometimes from more than 50 steam drums to dry and flatten the produced paper. These drums (cylinders with flat bottoms, see figure 1) will be used with a steam pressure up to 500 kPa (5 bar) and additionally with a rotation speed up 1200 m.min the material is mainly grey cast iron (with lamellar graphite). For the purpose of paint formulation the most important units of equipment are the laboratory ball mill, bead mills and high speed dispersers. The most common, the ball mill, consists of a cylindrical porcelain vessel a little more than half filled with steel, porcelain balls or pebbles. Pigment, together with sufficient binder and solvent to make a free-flowing mix, is loaded into the mill until it is approximately two-thirds full. The mill is then closed and fixed into a device whereby it is made to rotate about its major axis. Normally, a period of about 16 hours is required for thorough dispersion of the pigment, whereupon the mill-base is emptied out and blended with the remainder of the ingredients. [Pg.587]
