Regulators are used to reduce cylinder supply pressure to a lower use pressure. As stated previously, hydrogen uses a CGA 350 cylinder valve. This requires a CGA 350 outlet connection on the regulator. Be sure that the regulator you purchase for cylinder use has a CGA 350 outlet connection. The cell was equipped with a pressure gauge mounted in the stainless steel line after the air cylinder, a stainless steel reservoir with a volume of 2 L, a pressure release valve, a fluid inlet and oudet connection, a pressure safetj- valve, and a refill opening on top of the reservoir. In the United States and several other countries, the industry has developed standardized cylinder valve outlet and inlet connections, transfer connections, and regulator connections for specific types and groups of compressed gases to prevent the misapplication of these potentially hazardous materials. 

Container valve connections that do not fit must not be forced. Threads on regulator connections or other auxiliary requirements must match those on the container valve outlet. The valve outlet connection should conform to recognized standards such as ANSI/CGA V-1, American National, Compressed Gas Association Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valve Outlet and Inlet Connections [14]. However, it must be acknowledged that connections other than those found in ANSI/CGA V-1 may exist. If a user chooses such a connection, extreme care must be taken to ensure that such connections do not cross-connect with existing connections in ANSI/CGA V-1, and that they have been properly engineered for the intended gas service and pressure. The threads on a cylinder valve outlet, as well as on regulators and other ancillary equipment, should be examined at frequent intervals to ensure they are clean and undamaged. 

While no CGA standard exists for high-pressure station (manifold) connections, cylinder valves with X "inch, /2-inch, or 4-inch NGT inlet connections are commonly used with an appropriate CGA outlet connection for the application.

There are a number of different types of cylinder valves affixed to the cylinders that are deliverd to users. Regulators are attached directly to these cylinder valves by the user. Four commonly used types of cylinder valves are illustrated in Figs. 4-6 through 4-9.
